How to effectively use iCloud on iPhone? Delete the account. Otherwise, you might be inundated with relentless requests to log in to the account. Ridiculous.

I've had to sign in multiple times for several services (notably FaceTime) after system updates, but it's left me completely alone apart from that.

If I recall correctly, I had to authenticate for different uses of iCloud; I firmly recall having to actively allow iCloud calendar sync and address book sync separately. Once I did those, it left me alone. So that was basically 3 re-sign ins: iCloud itself, iCloud calendar sync and iCloud address sync.

icloud gives me no troubles. Exchange however... especially when it requires changing passwords every 3 months. Doing so usually messes with iDevices big time. :/
