A few months ago, whilst running 9.0.4 a "few" times my G4 450 MP would reboot into open firmware, and freeze
About a week or two ago, I upgraded to 9.1 and also installed the latest firmware, now I cannot do any sort of restart - it goes straight into open firmware and freezes displaying the following message:
OPEN, unknown word DEFAULT CATCH!, code 300 at %SRR0: ff80b070 %SRR1: 00003030
Apple PowerMac3, 3 3. 1f1 BootROM built on 06/28/00 at 17:46:21
All rights reserved
Welcome to open firmware
To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return
To shutdown, type "shut-down" and press return
ok
0> _
And because its "frozen"(?) I can't type anything and have to pull the power cord... Leaving it a few seconds I can do a "normal" start by pressing the power button
This is getting really frustrating....any ideas anyone???
Thanks in advance...
Ande

Ummm, actually it is "-", not "_" as you claim. So just to restate its showing: mac-boot not mac_boot
Not that this detail makes any difference I'm sure...

Watch how you speak dude, we don't want any smartasses around here, especially when you're wrong anyway.
Ande, reboot and hold Apple-Option-P-R, then let go after the third chime, and let the computer boot happily into the MacOS
I hope...

MacManMikeOSX,
It's "between" not "beetween."

Looks like I spoke too soon...just had a crash and hit the reset button and rebooted straight into open firmware and froze...oh well...it was good while it lasted (half a day?). Guess its a call to Apple to try and sort this heap of junk out...

Just a wild guess, but do you have 192 MB of RAM installed on your computer?
If you do, go ahead and either add or subtract RAM...
I had the same problem, and it disappeared with more, or less, memory.
There have been discussions about this on MacFixIt, and on the Apple Discussion Boards...

I'm typing this with 64 megs less in my 'puter, leaving only 128... Thank you, thank you, thank you Tom, I've just done several restarts, each time rebooting perfectly! Guess its time to buy more RAm to take me over 192...
Cheers
