I fired up an IRC server this afternoon. Please feel free to use this instead of AIM to talk to your MacNN peeps. I'm going to move it over to an OC48 backbone with DCC send ability if this is popular and people use it.

The IP address again is 24.176.240.93. Use port 7000.

The channels that have already been created are #lounge and #techsupport. If you want more channels, suggest some by dropping me a line ( [email protected].

Enjoy the IRC server. It does have minor flood control to ban spammers. If you send a message faster than every two seconds 15 times, you will be kicked from the server. You may rejoin, but please refrain from spamming. I don't have much bandwidth right now. I only have enough for say, 32 connections that don't send files.

Thanks for trying me out. It'll be fun if we could all chat in a real chatroom instead of AIM, since AIM chatrooms are ghetto, make a lot of noise, and are very laggy. Again, thanks, and please use my service. If you want administrator privilages, mail your requests to me.

It's a great server. Thanks for using it, John.

People with broadband connections can idle here. I don't mind. In fact, please idle here.

Yeah, I know. I host it on this comp under WebSTAR - I'll chuck it up later (my Hotline server is running instead at the moment... and I want it to have all the bandwidth).

Nobody cares. I'm going to host a Quake server instead if you guys keep ignoring and neglecting my cool IRC server.

Toldya man. More people have HOTLINE.

And more people like Hotline - lots of people hate IRC.

Anyway, give it time. Its not exactly rush hour for the majority of members at MacNN yet...

I suppose I'll try to reimplement this idea during the summer, when I have a real connection. I am either going to put it on a fiber backbone at Exodus or I might just get a 1.5-megabit SDSL into my house when it becomes available. I do not believe T1's are available to my area, nor could I afford one even if they are available.

Well, consider the IRC server nonexistant after tomorrow. If nobody other than MacOS761 uses it in the next few days, it will be taken down. I'll run a Hotline server instead.
