so I never carry a wallet when I go out for a night on the town. I carry cash almost exclusively, and I carry that directly in my pocket, sometimes in a clip. ID in the pocket as well, good to go. This particular evening I needed to show not only ID but also my credit card at will call, to prove I'm the same guy who purchased the ticket online. I thought about ID/CC/Cash in a rubber band but didn't do it. Just put grabbed the wallet.

Went to the club, it stayed in the pocket the whole time, I remember having it when I left. Got in my car, drove back up towards home, and my posse and I rolled thru IHOP. I didn't use any money of any kind at IHOP, and from this point on I don't see my wallet again. When I got home I realized it wasn't around, and thought I'd find it in the morning with a thorough search but no dice. Paid a visit to the IHOP again and a manager looked in the safe but it wasn't there. Still waiting on the club to get back to me on a search of their safe, but I really think it was some dumb maneuver like getting out of the car with the wallet ON my lap or driving off with it on the roof. ughh.

Cards are cancelled and I ordered new ones. I've got quite a few automatic online bill payments I need to change rather quickly, and many more online retailers that have my info stored need to be changed as well, but no rush there.

I have teh next two days off, maybe I'll go to the DMV and get a replacement. My last few experiences there have been painless, no horrifyingly long lines or whatnot, This would be good because I could have one tomorrow as opposed to ordering it online and getting it in a week or so.

And why do I feel dumber than I should?
Because my social sec. card was in there. I needed it a few months ago for something and hadn't put it back in the house. I hope the fscking wallet got run over by 200 cars, or got soaked thru and thru by rain water rendering my old and tattered ss card illegible.

It's got me feeling uneasy. I've been to the ssa site and I'm gonna try and get a new card tomorrow at my local ssa office, but yea.

idiot!

edit: is it a plus that I have pretty bad credit? so they can't just go getting approved for a bunch of expensive crap?

There's this one service, they advertise it on KFI640 where the owner of the company gave out his SSN right over the air. It only costs a few bucks a month and they gaurantee that you will not be a victim of any fraud with your SSN no matter who gets it.

Very sorry man. That's one of the scenarios I absolutely dread. I agree with Buckaroo - take a look at Life Lock - I can't vouch for the product myself but it's impressive sounding.

All I can say is that I'm sorry. I've thought that I lost my wallet a few times, but it always turned up in a really weird place that I just didn't remember to look.

I hope that nothing happened in the short time that it's been missing. Way to jump out quickly and get your cards cancelled.

Sorry.

That sucks Icy.

I've never lost my wallet - because I've never owned one. Sort of stops these incidents dead. Cash in the right-hand jeans pocket, cards in the (buttoned) inside jacket pocket. Works a treat - try it.

Maybe, just maybe, a real human being will find it and return it to you. What kind of society do we live in anyway where the most common result of losing a wallet is having your identity stolen? Why can't people do the right thing and return the items they find?

Or directly through one of the three credit companies. For the next couple of months, you should have your account on Fraud Alert. If anyone tries to get a credit cards, loan etc with your information, they will have to call and verify their identity.

I'm not sure where to find it, but I've seen it in action before.

When I worked at Best Buy a few years ago, a guy wanted to get a store credit card. It came back that it needed identity verification or something like that and he had to call a phone number. He told that someone once took a credit card out in his name by intercepting some mail, so he had a fraud alert put onto his accounts which made anything require verbal authorization.

Try shooting them an email. Let them know that your SS is out in the wild and you are attempting damage prevention.

No I don't have a stake in the company. Gads. I just heard the add of KFI640, and was impressed that the CEO gave out his SSN. I didn't sign up for it since I didn't think I needed it. If you look back through the posts, you'll notice that I wasn't the first one that provided the link, I just mentioned the advertisement that I heard on the radio. I did repeat the link last night when someone else found it.

The CEO is still listed on the web site. Are we sure the comments saying he resigned is correct? I don't know, I just thought it was a good deal.

And if your idea of calling people names for trying to help you out, SCREW YOU! BTW, what is negative about turtles? I felt slammed, but wasn't sure.

The founder resigned, not the CEO. Still, with the founder being a con man, how much confidence does that give you in the company ?
