Hello. I'm using Mac OS 10.6.3 with a bootcamp install of Windows 7.
I'd really like to make it so that when my Mac starts up and I need to choose between Mac OS and Windows (bootcamp) the Windows volume has a custom icon.
From what I've read the old ways of doing this (pre 10.6) no longer work. Does anyone have a new method? Or am I SOL?

Are you talking about the built-in EFI boot choice screen that you get by holding option? Do you really see it often enough and long enough to care?

I most certainly am.
Sure, you don't see it for long, but it would be nice for it to have an icon other than a generic hard drive.
Sure, you probably don't look at your login background for long or your login user icon, but it's nice to change them to something interesting if need be.
I was just wondering if anyone had figured out how to do this.

Does changing the volume's icon in the Finder (Get Info window, copy and paste into icon field) not do the trick?

The boot loader doesn't even bother to get the Windows volume's name, let alone its custom icon. And NTFS volumes are read only, so you can't even set a custom icon with the Finder to begin with.
This is such a minor issue (and if possible to change would require an enormous amount of hackery), the it's simply the best to accept it the way it is and be done with it.

You can set the icon in the Finder with some trickery, but it won't reflect the change in the loader. Short of hacking the EFI I'm not sure there's a way to get around it.

It can be done by changing the default icon for hard drives to whatever you'd like the Windows partition to look like, and then applying a custom icon to the Mac partition. Candybar can do it, I think.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I tried using the free program LiteIcon to change the default volume icon, which does the trick when in Finder, but not in the boot loader.
I'll give Candybar a try. After that I'll just give up. It is too much trouble to be worth it, but I figured if there was an easy solution, it would be nice.
