Thanks to our ringer, [email protected], whoever you are. He turned in 89,000 units, a couple days ago!
Of course, persistance has its rewards, too. Congrats, everyone!

yeah I heard a guy did that at some university and then had to pay the T3 bill for all of the time he spent uploading and downloading the packets, somthing like 100,000 sucks but he got great stats though

I'd have to make sure they had no way to track me... I think their only PIII's anyway. Now if I do any installs (volunteer work) then it shouldn't really matter technically right? I mean, they could only track me through my e-mail, and since it isn't my school, I wouldn't really be suspected. In a T1 line, do they charge a flat rate, or by usage/bandwidth?

The email address could be used to contact the RC5 people who, possibly under court order, have to turn over every IP that results were logged from.
The T1 usage isn't what you'd have to worry about. You could be billed by the computer's owner for every hour on every computer that ran RC5 without their permission. That alone could rack up to some serious bucks.
Is the potential gain REALLY worth the risk?

There are certainly ways to ensure safety on something like this, but it's not really worth the risk.
You could, for example, set up a separate account with distributed.net strictly for using at the remote location. You don't share with your home machine. You use a bogus email, signed up for it using the school computer, supplying only bogus information. You never check that email again. You wipe the keyboard when you leave to remove fingerprints. You never touch that computer again.
Is it worth the risk? I don't think so.
BTW, the lawsuit mentioned was in Georgia (where I live). The story is here. The guy was looking at 30 years in jail and $100,000 in fines, but the judge was sensible, and he ended up with probation and a $2100 fine.
