Backstory: I'm mirroring my local web content to my public server. Perhaps 6000 files. This has always worked via my DSL. This week I switched to Comcast cable and all of a sudden I'm getting a timeout after some amount of comparing and uploading.
Analysis: This happens with the latest versions of both Interarchy and Panic Transmit. I haven't grabbed the stopwatch yet, but it fails after several minutes (at least). I checked the sysctl timeout value (which I can't find here) and it was 144000 or somesuch.
Later today I'll switch back to DSL to try and isolate the problem as a cable or remote machine problem. Any suggestions?

I'm betting it's something to do with Comcast and how they have your connection configured. They may be blocking port 80 traffic inbound to customers, as one example.

Try throttling down your upload bandwidth. Comcast is 6 Mbps down but only about a twentieth of that up.

According to dslreports.com I'm getting a full 4/350.
I was playing with Throttled Pro to tweak upstream traffic, any and all hints graciously accepted. What and how do y'all deal with this?
Why would throttling help? Wouldn't a time-out happen early on rather than after a quarter-hour or so?

The timeouts could have to do with your "customer buffer" or whatever they call it at Comcast getting full and not passing traffic fast enough for the remote application.
Have you talked to Comcast's tech support about this?

I've just replicated this via wired SBC Yahoo! DSL (at my son's school), so I think I've taken Comcast out of the loop, and pointed the finger at 1and1.com's hosting. I can't think of anything else which has remained constant in my testing.
I sent email to both Stairways (Interarchy) and 1and1 and we'll see what's what. Unfortunately I'm using email with 1and1 (since I can't be on the phone whilst at school).
Since the problem isn't Comcast cable, I'd like to move this discussion to a more appropriately-named thread, 1and1 web host timeout during FTP uploads (all clients). Follow-ups will happen there. Please continue over there. Many thanks!

I've closed this thread because the OP started this new one.
DO let us know how this unfolds; my son is seriously looking into a 1and1 account...
