New tech: Core Image and Core Video. doing processing in graphics processor (GPU), not the CPU.

For people without Photoshop, this is amazing. Imagine being able to drop an image in an app not meant to edit pictures such as OmniGraffle and adding a sepia tone or making it b&w from within the app.

I need to see it before real predictions can be made, but there is the chance that this will allow shareware apps to do a lot of what photoshop does now (obviously not a photoshop killer, but definitely it will take a chunk out of PhotoDelux).

I guess the first app usng this technology is iPhoto 05, could result in a quite cool app.

Core Image and Core Video have obviously been in the works for some time (iPhoto!).

Hopefully, this will get Adobe to figure out real upgrades to Photoshop than things like the healing brush and file browser. The last several upgrades haven't been worth the money, other than OS X compatibility.

Well you can apparently put filters on video and images in any app that wants to take advantage of it.

So yeah...not a Photoshop killer but will add features that people may want to existing apps and that didn't want to shell out billions of dollars to get Photoshop.

But is this the first step towards a Photoshop-killer app Apple has underwraps?

3rd-party software now becomes much more powerful with this...and someone can probably start making a very powerful Photoshop-like app too now that this brings a system-wide filter plugins to *all* apps.

Why make a Photoshop plugin now when making a Core Image/Video plugin would benefit the whole OS X community. This is only good news!

I hated the Spotlight search feature but Core Image/Video more than makes up for any booboo Apple is coming up next (like that Konfab-like Expos� thingy).

iPhoto will never step on the toes of Photoshop. They are completely different apps with completely different purposes.

I think Photo retouching is very much what Adobe makes their money from, especially with printer and scanner bundles (not necessarily to PS app, but things like Elements).

Photoshop is much more than filters, and I suspect Photoshop to support Core Image in the future.

Dashboard: addressbook, calculator etc... hit one button to pull them all up.

Not a chance... Adobe makes their money from layout apps and other high end workflow apps... InDesign (formerly PageMaker), Illustrator, Photoshop...

There's many, many, many things that these apps can do that Apple's not willing to do... yet.

However, I see no point in Photoshop CS or lite or whatever they want to call it if Apple's going to do this.

Down the road, I could see Apple making a Photoshop killer, but that's in the area of the map that's labelled, "Theyre bee Draygons Here!" (sic)

Unless iPhoto starts doing more than applying filters, Adobe has nothing to fear.

And iPhoto isn't about photo retouching at all.

You should at least try Photoshop before comparing it with iPhoto + filters.

I would guess that core image is trying to compete against the video and image sections of DirectX, I would even wonder if Adobe might be pushing Apple to add these functions to the toolkit, so that they can use them in their apps... it would be interesting to do a direct comparison of the two API's...

I'm not so clear on what's happening with .Mac, but maybe Apple will finally add enough stuff that makes it worth $99 a year instead of my paying $60 a year for my own IMAP account/hosting.

looks like they are trying to get to a point (when broadband is there) so that you can log into any mac and have it sync your stuff to it.

I wish, but in order to keep cross-platform consistency between the Mac and Windows versions of Photoshop the core application frameworks probably shouldn't rely on by-OS technologies, but hey here's hoping I'm wrong!

They are also providing an SDK so these same 'stepped on toes' can develop for DashBoard.

iChat AV getting better is BIG news. Better quality, more people. Very cool.

As for Widgets and Gadgets... let us see what it actually is (like Expose) before we pound on it.

They'll use CoreImage in Photoshop the same way MS now uses Address Book in Office/Entourage.

Whats wrong witht he Widgets? If you dont like them then dont use them. Just cause you cant find a use for them doesnt mean someone else wont.

I personally think they are a cool feature.

It looks like Apple's strategy is changing: Don't develop for the millions of users already out there.. develop for the users that will be there when they buy the new hardware to take advantage of all of this new stuff.

It makes sense.. .how else to get people to want to buy the latest and greatest G5s? Ghz alone?

That's really, really disappointing.

No mentions of QT7, no mentions of a new, better Finder (other than that Spotlight ****), no mentions of a new database. Apple is slacking off...the only exciting news is 64-bit, the codec, iChat and CoreImage.

I personally think they are a cool feature.

I just don't like the idea of rolling so much into the OS. It's like Apple is going the way of Windows. Leave it as an application, that way I don't have to open it. But don't force me to run the thing if I don't want to use it.

All that's not worth it unless you have a G5 and lots of pixels on screen. Ah...I see what they want us to do.
