Did you happen to notice those were the standard bookmarks that come with Safari? Did you hate your Mac when you first bought it because they were preinstalled at that time? What a dumb reason to give for hating an update. OOOOO Apple put bookmarks to US companies. God forbid a "Big US Corp" such as apple would do such a horrible thing, especially to a canadian, who in tern can most likely make use of the websites shown.

I agree with him also, I mean out of the box the bookmarks are ok but reinstalling them for an update is intrusive.

Better write a letter to jobs telling him how bad of an update 10.3.9 was then! The nerve! I'm sure it had something to do with resetting the preference file to some extent. If you've ever trashed your plist for safari you'll notice those bookmarks come back.

The reappearing bookmarks were a little annoying, but I still say the "to major US corporations!" bit was a little out of left field.

1. After removing 3rdpartystuff Safari won't crash anymore. New Pithhelmet works.
2. MIDDLEMOUSEBUTTON to send a link to a new tab won't work anymore. Anyone else?

EDIT: AFTER REBOOT THIS IS OKAY AGAIN!

3. While being in Proteus having some text already marked in Safari one thing won't work anymore:

Proteus is focused on and I press CMD and drag the text out of Safari over to Proteus w/o it changeing the focus to Safari. Worked before, doesn't work anymore now.
4. Finding-while-typing didn't work in the last Safariversion anymore, too. :-(

Well, as mentioned before, I'm an IE 6 drone now, but if I hypothetically were using Safari, it would be garbled here too.

I would say it's probably a CSS thing.

Couldn't really be a PHP thing, since PHP is run on the server, not the client computer.

Safari 1.3 multitasks better, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it has become incredibly faster.

OTOH it no longer remembers window position settings. Safari now seems to put new windows centered at the top of the screen. It used to put them where I had the last open window. I preferred it that way. Too bad.

Is it possible that Pith Helmet and SAFT could be slowing down safari 1.3? Has anybody noticed it? I'm just wondering if Pith Helmet's 'extra' filtering steps might actually end up causing a delay in page display.

Works fine for me. As many others have said, check for extras that you may have installed. A common culprit is any Input Managers stored in /Library/InputManagers.

Actually, Safari is rendering the page quite flawlessly.

The overlapping text occurs because Friendster's server side browser detection code mistakenly sends Safari the following stylesheet:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen, print" href="/css/fixie.css">

If you change Safari's user agent by spoofing (Debug menu), the problem goes away. I'm sure Friendster will fix this soon.

Just wanted to clear that up

Now in Software Update: Java Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9

Direct link

After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari. Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch. This update resolves that issue.
This fix appears to replace the redownload-the-Security-Update fix.

Up to this point I'd have to say that 10.3.9 is one of the worst things to hit my Mac. The hard drive seems to be working almost continuously. It will work for 5 minutes, stop for a few seconds and then almost anything I do makes it start working again. Safari 1.3 is, in my opinion, is nowhere near as useful as 1.2. It is very slow to start up from the doc. Every now and then I get the beachball for almost nothing, like pulling down a menu item, and Safari won't let me do anything for about 15 seconds. I would go back to 10.3.8 immediately if Tiger wasn't going to be available this week.

I'd suggest your install is messed up. You can hardly say it's 10.3.9's fault if most of us aren't having these problems.
