They also seem to be 100% worldwide voltage compliant now, no more references to specific country of purchase. i.e. 100-240V, 50-60 Hz Good News and a great update.

Cheaper, Faster and better (more features)

That's a really nice iMac upgrade!

- 2GHz on 2 of the 3 models
- AirPort Extreme built-in
- Bluetooth 2.0 built-in
- Gigabit Ethernet
- 512 MB RAM
- ATI 9600 with 128MB VRAM

Looks a lot like the PowerMac specs, though. In fact it actually shows how weak the latest PowerMac upgrade really was... Yes, PMs are duals and their bus is faster, but that's hardly worth twice the price ( minus the monitor ).

But iMacs are a really good value now.

They are great value by the way !!

My original iMac G5 was this spec and cost 1730 :-

20-inch widescreen LCD
1.8GHz PowerPC G5
600MHz frontside bus
512K L2 cache
1GB DDR400 SDRAM
160GB Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (double-layer)
GeForce FX 5200
64MB video memory
56k internal modem
Airport and Bluetooth
AppleCare

The equivalent spec now would be :-

20-inch widescreen LCD
2GHz PowerPC G5 - BETTER
667MHz frontside bus - BETTER
512K L2 cache
1GB DDR400 SDRAM - SAME but cheaper
250GB Serial ATA hard drive - BETTER
Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (double-layer) - BETTER
ATI Radeon 9600 - BETTER
128MB DDR video memory - BETTER
56k internal modem
Airport + Bluetooth - NOW FREE
AppleCare

All for 1430 a massive 300 less and loads of new stuff !!!

And that does not include the money I paid for Tiger and iLife which you get included.

Not worth an upgrade for me, but a great deal for new buyers - WOW

yep, the 20" represents remarkable value - I was debating the 20" or 17" high-end model but now the choice is clear, 20" all the way. It shall be mine after payday...

That is a good deal. I have a original FP iMac and was going to wait until March 2006 to replace it but the 20 inch model is a great deal.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

Ordered the 20" model already; and then noticed this:

"Great ambience
When you put your iMac G5 to sleep, you may become captivated by its pulsating sleep light. But in low-light environments, a sensor detects the rooms ambient light and adjusts the sleep light to match, so you and your iMac G5 can both catch some Zs"

That's excellent news, the sleep light on Rev.A iMacs could light up a whole room.

It looks like it's finally time to upgrade my old iMac. Is there an advantage to ordering through the online store versus buying at an Apple retail store or elsewhere? How long will it take for these to show up at the retail stores?

wow , this is a seriously excellent upgrade , really impressive

whats the point of buying a low end tower now ?

for 1300 you get a massive screen and an impressive piece of kit with loads of software vs a tower and no screen

it's a no contest

the new imac is gonna be a MASSIVE hit !!!!!

That is a very worthwhile update. Maybe I should have asked Apple to replace my iMac with one of these new iMacs instead of a PowerMac.

On another note it looks like the iMac has passed the low end PowerMac in terms of options and value. The low end PowerMac only has a 1.8GHz processor, BT and AE are extra, Radeon upgrade is extra, and the hard drive is still at 80GB, 600MHz BUS instead of 667, 8X SuperDrive instead the the DL SuperDrive.

Very nice update. I don't see where there can be many complaints with this one.

Although the box of a PowerMac is much bigger and therefor much more able to upgrade & improve in various ways, the new iMacs indeed are attractive.

I yhink this can only mean new PowerMacs are around the corner in a couple of months, if it was only to disticnt them from the iMacs.

Let's wait and see.

That would be nice. Apple has me confused with the upgrade though. Why did they let their consumer line suprass thier pro line? Granted it is their bottom of the line PowerMac but it doesn't make much sense. Hopefully you are right about new PowerMacs again soon.

Hm, I bought the Dual 2GHz when it was the middle model (8GB RAM fillings) and it's a hell of a machine! Don't forget the iMacs aren't very upgradable: only RAM and harddisk can be swapped, not the graphics card, not having that many ports like the audio in out the PowerMacs have

I just checked the Apple Store (online) and a last gen 17" 1.8GHz is going for $999 with education discount. That is a good deal also. If someone doesn't need the extras that come with the new one I don't see where someone could go wrong.

Wow, this is an excellent deal. And $999 for a 17" iMac is just awesome.

Kudos, Apple, you would have gotten my purchase if you hadn't released a Mac Mini and already sated my needs!
Using the Mac Mini with my Dell monitor and a PC part-time is really nice (especially since I need to learn the PC for my job this summer).

Hate to ruin the parade of good feelings with a negative remark, but I found this humorous: Apple calls the Radeon 9600 "ideal for next-generation games." Why does the company feel compelled to say such ridiculous things?

I'm in shock that the 512mb of RAM is on one stick! If I was even remotely in the market for a new desktop I would buy this is a second.

EDIT: Eug, now you have the PB, Cube, and iMac?

Yes. And the Cube is at 1.7 GHz too. The Cube is going to the office.

Now that I have ordered a G5, I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna get an 12" iBook or a 12" PowerBook. I want a new laptop by Xmas. (I have a 15" TiBook 1 GHz. Still very capable, but I want to replace it before the AppleCare runs out, and I want something smaller.)

Great update Apple. We're getting some great value here now. I agree that now it's becoming a little harder to justify a tower unless you have a specific application that requires that horsepower and system architecture.

It is being painfully difficult not to jump on the new iMacs. I think the 20" has my name written all over it... I got the money but I wanted to save it to buy a kite surfing and get a new Laser sail. However, working on my thesis on my old but trusted TiPB 400 is not as fun as it used to be.

Anyhow, I think the iMac systems are just perfect (even more with the educational discount).

Congrat to anybody who jumps and buy.

This update is freakin spectacular! Possibly the best iMac update ever. I can't believe they boosted the graphics card up to 128MB and threw in Gig ethernet just for kicks.

Eug, congrats on your purchase. I now have 3 reasons to envy you. Do me a favour and restrain yourself from posting if/when you do decide to eventually pick up the 12" PB.

I didn't notice the Gig ethernet. That makes this update even better.

I agree that this is possibly the best single update to the iMac line ever in terms of all around added upgrades.

Yea, the 20" iMac was reduced by $100. The 17" models are the same price.

This upgrade makes me want to trade in my Rev A iMac G5.

Ordered 20 inch iMac 10 days ago with $800 worth off add-ons. Received word today that I will get much improved upgrade for $450 less than original quote. Delighted. Hoped it will be shipped out (they say May 10) before the next upgrade. Will make nice complement to my 1.5 Gh PB with 1 G RAM. Sure glad I made the cut. If Apple had shipped out the old iMac model I would be on some sort of Suicide Watch list by now.

Actually, I'd say that the best deal is the 20" iMac. If you're going to use a DVD burner the way Apple suggests (making movies, backing up large photo albums, and so forth), you'd probably want the extra screen size in which to do your editing. You also get 90 GB more storage for all that extra content.

That said, if you can't justify the extra cash, the 17" Superdrive is fine. It can do everything the 20" can; it just has less storage out of the box, and less screen resolution.

I saw the 20 inch iMac at compusa the other day and the screen is so darn huge (was the first time I saw it). I think this is amazing value across the board for the iMac line. Even the 17 inch at 1299 with those specs is a nice value. Getting 4-5 years of use for those iMacs means a cost of 260-325 USD per year (is nothing!)... and with those specs.. I think it really does carry alot of value.
