Is there a no CD hack for Mac? It's a bitch having to use my only CD-drive to play a game, that CD belongs in its cover on my shelf and should only be picked out when/if I need to re-install...

I too would like to play Warcraft III without having the CD in the drive. I bought it, I registered it, it's totally legit. But I don't want to have the CD in the drive because

1) I don't want to carry the CD with my laptop everywhere I go
2) it takes more battery life to spin up and down the drive
3) it makes my laptop really hot
4) it slows the game down

So what we need is the equivalent of DVD Extractor so that we can extract the CD to the hard drive, and mount it whenever we want to. This solves the problem if you're running OS9.

Only problem? DVD Extractor isn't OSX compatible.

Does anyone know if there is an OSX compatible share/freeware application that will let me extract a CD to my hard drive, and mout it to the point where Warcraft will launch?

Thanks!

- Corey

I believe it's all on the HD already, and that the CD should be in just so that you can't install and play on 10 computers at te same time...I think we just need some crack to stop this...any developers out there with too much free time on their hands?

Has anyone tried making a disk image? Use either Toast or DiskCopy and make an image. Some games won't allow this (they need a real disc mounted), but most do. I would try this, by my copy hasn't arrived yet. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

With past Blizzard games, the solution has been to first create the disk image and then install the game from the disk image. Anyone tried that?

Make a .dmg with Disc Copy! I've done so and it works great. Only problem is that it takes up an additional 632 MB (total of 1,18 GB).

DMG works great with Diablo II and StarCraft also, very comfortable if you have the HD space

Is it possible to make like a dummy image?
Actually a more relevant question would be, what does War3 check for on the disc?
file size
cd name
etc.

PS.
When I first played the game on my Titanium and attempted to use the function keys for in game play and realized that that didn't work and I had pressed F12 (eject) the cd comes out and game play continues just fine.

So while you still have to tote the cd around you can atleast conserve power by not spinning the cd.

It may be of interest to note that the "copy protection" preventing people from playing on 10 computers with 1 CD is nonsense. When I wanted to test a LAN game before a party (see how to set it up) when Brood Wars first came out, I burned a copy of BW, installed 2 copies of SC with the same number, upgraded to BW and used the burned copy in one of the machines. You could also play single player, which defeats the purpose of such a protection.
Needless to say I have not used the copy since.

I tried many times to make a disk image of my Brood War CD so that I could play without the CD on the road. I had no luck using Disk Copy. While I could make the image it simply wouldn't play. I tried to do it more than one way. So this is indeed an interesting topic.

To summarize some of the posts above...

Warcraft III:
You can make a .img disk image using Disk Copy in OS 9 that will mount in both OS 9 and OS X and allow you to play WCIII without a physical disk. You can also use OS X's Disk Copy to make a .dmg disk image, but it won't automatically open in OS 9 without some extra software (I think).
Toast and DVDExtractor images won't work.

Diablo II, LoD, Starcraft, and Broodwars:
The Disk Copy disk images won't work in OS 9, but they will work in OS X.
In OS 9, you'll need to make disk images either with Toast or DVDExtractor.

You need to give the poeple that do the hacks at least a few weeks... I am not going to lie, I have downloaded a few games and played them... but I would NEVER do that to Blizzard... considering they do Apple the right way... I love kicking PeeCee peoples ars-es all over the server...

PeeCee User: "How fast is your system?"
Me: "733Mhz... why"

Pee Cee User: "That's Slow!"
Me: "Fast enough to kick your A$$"

oh... need to calm down... I did well this past weekend :-)

It works, but doesn't this donate 2 Gb of space to a game? I'm not sure I wanna do that...isn't there a patch to start the game without a CD since it will, as mentioned before, run without a CD?

.dmg works for me. I installed from the original CD, ran it a few times, and then made the dmg. No probs. But I too would like to free up that space with a patch or something.

The way I see it, disk space is cheap these days. If the disk space is really vital, just delete the image when you really need it.

Do the hacked apps get updated properly? I think blizzard usually replaces entire files rather than updating them, but I know that some apps have updaters that won't work with hacked apps. Using disk images save the hassle. I only use disk images for games I play frequently, like Diablo II, Baldur's Gate II, and Warcraft III.

So I tried to make a disk image using Disk Copy, and ended up with a file called "Warcraft III.cdr.dmg"

I tried mounting that, and running the game, but it still asks for the CD (even though there is a CD icon on the desktop).

Do I have to install from the partition? Or am I doing something wrong with the creation of the disk image?

Thanks!

Steps to make working War III image.

With Disc Copy:
1) Insert CD
2) Open Disc Copy, Go TO Image Menu-&gt;New Image From Device
3) Select the second one should be Disk1, select right under it disk1s1 below it should be two things, Apple_partition_map and Apple_HFS
3) Click the image button
4) Select DVD/CD master for Image Format and name it anythign you like, mine is CheesyPoofs.
5) There is no step 5, All you have to do now is mount it and it shall run.

With Toast:
1) Insert CD
2) Go to File menu-&gt;Save Disc Image
3) There is no step three, but there is a catch
4) In order to play YOU MUST MOUNT WITH DISC COPY, otherwise it will not work.

Happy CD free playing.

Did all the steps, the image mounted and displayed just like the real CD does, but when I launch the game, it asks to insert the Warcraft III CD??

Still not workin...I am thinking of buying a firewire enclosure for my old internal DVDROM drive - then I can leave it hooked up with the warcraft CD in....

The FINAL say on making a WarCraft 3 no-cd disc image:

Saving the image
Use Toast to save an image of only the Mac part of the CD by selecting Other &gt; Mac Volume in the Toast window, then choose File &gt; Save as Disc Image.

Mount the image
Mount the image in Toast by double-clicking the file that was saved and clicking the "Mount" button.

Remove unnecessary files
Throw away all visible files & folders EXCEPT the Support folder. All that should be left is and empty folder called "Support" at the root of the image. Eject the disc image.

Convert to .dmg
Use Disk Copy to convert the Toast image to a compressed .dmg file. In Disk Copy, choose Image &gt; Convert Image, select the Toast image file, and click "Convert." Name the new .dmg file, choose "Compressed" as the image format, and click "Convert."

You now have a .dmg file that is approximately 550KB and works to play WarCraft 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which makes sense, because of the huge 400MB file at Support/War3.mpq - no way that could be compressed that much.

Excellent tip. I don't have Toast, so I used Diskcopy in OS9 instead to create the read/write disk image. Then back into X, deleted everything, save and SWEEEEET!!

Thanks

Thanks so much bOOzo!!! It worked great. Here are the instructions if anyone needs them:
1) Download the file in bOOzo's post above
2) If necessary, extract the .dmg file from war3nocd.sid
3) Open Disk Copy from Macintosh HD | Applications | Utilities | Disk Copy
4) Drag and drop the extracted Warcraft III.dmg file to the main Disk Copy window
5) A progress indicator will be displayed in a new window and the image will be mounted
6) Thank bOOzo and play WarCraft III without a CD!

it works very nice - now, is there a way to do the same thing with starcraft/broodwar? I tried doing the same thing but it didn't seem to work. It works with civ3, but I don't know which files that can be thrown away so I have a 500 mb+ disc image....

That trick is great, it worked for Sim City 3000 also. I'm not sure you can do the same thing to Broodwar though, since I think it has to read a lot of stuff of the CD. And I tried with D2 LOD, but I think it's more sensitive than War3 is..

And the .dmg works in OS 9 on my iBook and PowerMac, but not on my old iMac rev d... hmm.. And when I convert the .dmg into an .img it gets a lot bigger, around 20 MB. Any one know a good way to convert an dmg into an img?

I used my .dmg to burn a CD, since I couldn't get the Classic version of Disk Copy to recognize it. Then went into 9, and ripped the CD using Disk Copy. That worked for me, but it too made the image a little bit bigger. I can't remember exactly how big it is, but it's bigger than the .dmg. I'm not too concerned about the difference in size though. It's way better than using a full .img or CD.

To use under Mac OS 9, you have to change the file's type and creator codes. You can do this using the free program resedit. Go to file-&gt;get file/folder info and select the .dmg image. I put ???? for the file type (I didn't know what the right one was) and ddsk for the creator. It mounted fine.

You now have a .dmg file that is approximately 550KB and works to play WarCraft 3!
This isn't possible using Mac OS 10.3.8 Disc Utility and Toast Titanium 6 as far as I can tell. Anyone have updated way to do this? I've got my War III CD in my hand ready to roll as soon as someone can tell me what to do!

Edit - I found a War III one to download. I wanted to use my own disc but this will have to suffice. I still need to do this with my Broodwar and Diablo II LoD discs too so instructions would still be welcome!

Rename the Toast extension from .toast to .dmg and disk copy will allow you to convert it.

Thanks, that worked great for my War 3 CD. I still was unable to make Diablo 2 LoD and Brood War images though like that. I know I've done it in the past years ago, just can't seem to get it to work this time around with the newer software
