I currently have a 20" iMac G5 2.1 Ghz and the most demanding work I use it for is standard definition editing.

High Definition video is starting up, but there is still no burner widely available to burn hdv or avchd files.

I wonder when Apple will present its MacPros with a blu-ray burner.

That would be my soonest point of upgrade.

If Apple is officially going with Blu-Ray as the standard, then I'd expect an introduction at Macworld.

I don't know if we're there yet. There are way too many people waiting on the sidelines for a
unified standard. Second, media prices are still more expensive than HardDrives [25GB disk is $14 which is approx $0.56/GB versus approx $0.30 to $0.34 for a 250/300GB Hard Drive]

Apple is officially endorsing both standards, BlueRay and HD-DVD. However since there are no affordable burners on the market yet, I guess they'll support those standards as soon as Apple gets their hands on a sufficient amount of drives
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

If you're itching to have Blu-ray in your Mac Pro you could always purchase one.

But are the proper drivers available? It would not be fun to spend $850 on a DVD burner.

Not sure if they're there in OS X, but you could always use BootCamp ;-). Technically you're still using a Mac Pro...

I wouldn't want one now - not until there is some degree of standardization. Blue-Ray could become the BetaMax of the 2000's.

Blu-Ray is going to be a viable format for computers soon. It doesn't really make a big deal if it becomes like the betamax if you use it for data storage and backups, which it will soon be very good for. Right now though, with internal burners starting at $750 from Sony, I'd wait a while.

A blu-ray or an hd-dvd burner will be crucial for burning the content of hd video camcorders.

It looks pretty good for blu-ray, I think, as it has a larger capacity.

Also, the compression standard H.264 seems to be the same as that of AVCHD, an up and coming hd compression format.

What I wonder: will blu-ray and hd-dvd discs be sensitive to scratches - maybe even more so than sd dvds?

I don't think bluray's gonna do anything, if you really wanna give sony some money....go buy one... but if your like me you tend to avoid the poo sony cranks out.

It seems like they will be scratch hell. Buffers with that kind of size would begin to get expensive to put into a BD/HD-DVD player.

I will just lean back and wait at this time.

The prices are much too high for both burner and media. I also don't want to play test rabbit for the electronic media industry.

I just wonder on what spot the decision between blu-ray and hd-dvd will turn.

Or if we are going to have two hd formats.

I think the main points are: price, reliabililty(of the burned disc and the reading of it and also that of the player), and finally the performance.

Performance: Has anybody had a chance to compare blu-ray and hd-dvd?

AFAIK, both formats will hit a wall when they have reached the maximum rotation speed of the disc. Also, there is no writable HD-DVD format yet. It should be out before too long.

Also the performance is believed to be lower according to Wikipedia. We shall see how ti turns out.

Someone (3M I think) created a scratch-proof coating for optical disks... IIRC they demo'd it with one of the high def video disk standards.
