I updated via Software Update (usually use the combo updater) and now Safari (5.0.2) crashes about 2-5 seconds after attempting to open any web page.

The new Mac App Store does the same thing; it crashes a few seconds after launching it. There is a thread in the Apple discussion forums that talks of a mounted Boot Camp partition interfering with the Mac App Store, but I don't have a Boot Camp partition. I tried unmounting the Time Machine drive, thinking perhaps it was related to any mounted drive other than the main drive, but no love.

I deleted both and re-ran the update using the combo updater with no success.

I alos tried clearing out the various caches using Onyx and repairing disk permissions, still no luck.

Has anybody else seen this? I may revert back to 10.6.5 via Time Machine and re-install the update using the combo updater.

Can you create a new user (if you don't have a second user already) and see if the issue persists?

That will let us know if we need to be focusing on something specific to your user or something that is system wide.

I'm glad I waited with the update.
10.6.6 seems more buggy than previous updates.

Rushed out to get some headline news during CES ?

I've updated 10+ computers (laptops, imacs, one mac pro, and one server install) with zero issues.

Well, I guess I'm gonna do a complete bootable backup before I go for it.

No issues here either on any of my Macs. Actually it seems like it's the first update for me that hasn't broken ANYTHING at all, not even lightbox for Mail.

I haven't had any issues with upgrading OS X in two years.

I guess it's my turn now

I recalled that troubleshooting technique while I was in the middle of the Time Machine restoration. I'm back to 10.6.5 and downloading the combo update. I'll try running that and see what happens. If the issue returns, I'll try a new account.

I haven't had any update issues in recent memory either; this is the first in a long time, if ever. I did have a gut feeling when running Software Update, but figured I could restore from the backup if I had to, and "What's the worst that could happen?"

After restoring to 10.6.5 and running the combo update, the symptoms persist; Mac App Store crashes on startup, and Safari crashes after loading any web page. I created a new test account, changed none of the defaults, and the problem persists.

Here is the starting portion of the system log documenting the error. By the "Thread 0 Crashed:" text, it indicates (to me anyway) that there was a JavaScript issue.

I found this link to a Apple discussion forum:

Apple - Support - Discussions - App Store does not open ...

I'll try that and see what happens.

The fix appears to have worked...I could connect to the Mac App Store and Safari did not crash.

What exactly from that thread did you do? I'm not clear what the fix is if we see this again.

Yes, I should have included that detail, sorry. I removed and reinstalled Safari using the Safari download from the Apple website.
