I spent less than $150 total on a CO2 tank, double gauge regulator, hoses, clamps, air chuck, valve, and a 2 liter bottle. You could build one for half that if you bought everything used or online, but I was impatient and I wanted to finish it before a party this weekend.
I made a "carbonator" cap (tire valve stuck through a bottle cap), set my regulator to 50 psi, and let it fly. I'm having so much fun carbonating whatever I can get my hands on. I can make sparkling water for about 2 cents a liter. I'm drinking some carbonated fruit punch (100% fruit juice.)

Interesting. How did you arrive at the 50 psi figure?
The obvious method is a bit messy. Make two pressure bottles. Increase the pressure until the first bottle blows. Then use a lower pressure on the second bottle.

Yep, what Spheric said.
I have been a Soda Club user for more than 12 years.

We use this model:
Am currently investigating ways to get the CO2 bottles refilled by a local guy for $4.00 a bottle rather than the ridiculous $15.00 a bottle sodastream charges.
I make my own ginger ale syrup, most refreshing summer drink ever.

I get over 2000 liters worth of carbonation for $10, which is why I made my own instead of using Soda Club or SodaStream which all had horrible reviews on Amazon, mostly because of its horribly overpriced refills. And since mine is just a standard gas tank, I can get it refilled absolutely anywhere that deals with CO2, including PaintBall shops.

Just reading other peoples' experience with their own kits. Most people think between 50 and 60 psi for the best carbonation. Just fill a 2 liter or any bottle that uses one of the caps with whatever you wanna carbonate, then pressurize, give a good shake, pour. Takes about 10 seconds.
2 liter bottles are rated to 130 psi, so you have a lot of leeway to experiment with.

Amazon reviews about the machine itself are uniformly positive, the only thing people are complaining about is the cost of refills. And there are ways to refill the gas bottles without paying the admittedly ridiculous fees that Sodastream charges. Just change the valves and then fill from any food grade CO2 supplier.
No disrespect to your work, but I don't think my wife would be thrilled to have an industrial gas tank standing in the kitchen

While you're right, the cost here works against buying carbonated table water, so you still come out massively ahead - and don't carry bottles/refunds back and forth.

That's what I meant to say. They're good, but bad because of the refills.

The valve is unique to those machines. From what I read, there's a company that sells an adapter that costs more than just buying a new soda machine.

Mine is inside the cabinet, I just took it out to take pictures. If I owned and didn't rent, I thought about just running the hose up through the sink. You could then just carbonate drinks at the sink.

Does your sink have an unused faucet mounting hole? Alternatively, if you got a new single-hole faucet, that would free up two mounting holes.
You could use the mount flange for a pull-out spray to make it look neater, and to discourage spilled water from finding a way down through an open hole.

Very disappointing. I totally read this as "home carbonite kit" and was excited to see some Han Solo goodness.

Just found something really cool - a hose that connects to the Sodastream at one end and a commercial CO2 bottle at the other. I might be able to pull that one off.

It really depends how much you worry about things. CO2 is CO2 at the end of the day. I'd go to a restaurant supplier for cleanliness but that's all.

As long as it doesn't contain argon, there's no difference.
