Airdrop
Be sure to check the system requirements, though. My Mac, even though it has Airdrop, is too old to see my iPad, apparently.

When you swipe up from the bottom of the screen and bring up control center, there should be an icon in one of the dark boxes that looks like a pie of concentric circles with a wedge taken out. It should be right next to the airplane. Tap it, and it turns blue. It will also turn on both wi-fi and bluetooth if they aren’t on already.

Thanks T, did not even think of swiping, but I'm new to ipad.

I did find it but still stuck if you can believe it.

On laptop I have folder airdrop, shows ipad.

But on ipad, I've tapped click everything: air drop, then receiving off, everyone. nothing happens. Not a very intuitive easy thing I guess. Bit maddening, non intuitive still. Maybe I'm still doing something wrong..?

Of course the "receiving off" is puzzling.. why would someone invent airdrop and have receiving off as default. I tap it, stay the same off.

Airdrop system requirements are absolutely insane. My MBA 2011, which has all the hardware it needs, still won't enable Airdrop to my iPad. Why? Because the 2011 MBP can't do it, and Apple doesn't want the cheaper model of the same year to be supported when the more expensive one isn't. It is possible to hack that lock off, but it always annoyed me.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Tell me about it, P. My late 2009 iMac is fully AirDrop capable, yet it can't see my iPad Air. It seems highly arbitrary, since the iMac is able to run High Sierra (if I wanted to.) I put it down to Apple being Apple, i.e. subtly pushing you into buying new hardware.

What's the hack you speak of? Would it magically let my iMac see my iPad?

You should get a pop-up on the iPad that asks where you want the file to go or which app you want to use with the file. I'm not sure about a folder, though. You might be able to save it to the "On My iPad" Location in your Files app (it's the file folder on your toolbar.)

Try it and see what happens. It shouldn't just drop a file on your iPad without asking you first.

But.... I'm not getting the ask for anything! Both new devices...

Yes, it's folder of stuff...
So Air drop is not for folders?

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Up pops your toolbar.
