Powerball and Mega Millions Sales Suspended in Illinois in ‘Unprecedented Step’ | NBC News

You know you've hit bottom when your state can't even get it up to fleece the poor.

Even more local, in a move which "reflects our commitment to public health", Cook County passed a "sweetened beverage tax".

Okay, it's a stupid idea. Whatever.

I'm going to be paying it, because I drink soda by the gallon. Whatever.

I'm going to be paying it because I drink diet soda by the gallon. Public health my ****ing ass.

Wait until you get your rain tax. In maryland, we got taxed because it ****ing rained. Thankfully, we just put an (R) into the governorship and that nonsense was among the first things to go.

This caused such a freak-out, it's getting repealed.

Now there's a bajillion dollar hole in the county budget.

The county Public Defender's office told the Sheriff he has a week to stop inmates from masturbating in the presence of her staff, or they'll stop seeing clients at facilities the Sheriff controls.

I think we have one of those coming in. Lucky my vice is chocolate milk, not 'soda' which I cannot drink for the life of me. Its all far too fizzy, I don't find it all thirst quenching. And cola tastes like shit anyway. Makes a good toilet cleaner though.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Cola is an overrated flavor.

I like Mountain Dew. It's trashy.

My esophagus herniated due to several days straight of vomiting from food poisoning, which makes carbonation difficult for me to handle. What I do now is keep my soda at room temperature, and use a lot of (preferably crushed, since it melts faster) ice to water it down.

I'm pretty sure chocolate milk was included in ours.

Yeah, cola sucks. I find the carbonation makes my tongue numb and I can't taste much, then it has a similar effect on my throat and so theres little sensation of having drunk much.
I like my drinks as cold as possible all year round, except for my whisky and my annual cup of coffee.

I do as well, though I like hot chocolate and probably do a mocha per month. I drift in and out of chai.

My "hot drink" in the winter is chicken broth.

I like hot choc too but not too hot. I have pondered in recent years over some recipes I found that involved warm milk, whisky and nutmeg and so forth, but never got around to trying any.

Diet soda isn't a neutral drink.

Diet sodas aren't necessarily much healthier than regular sodas.

I'm going to hold out on the idea there's a significant difference between tricking your body into thinking it's drunk a gallon of sugar, and actually drinking a gallon of sugar, but point taken.

Diet soda your body isn't really tricked. You still crave the sugar.

Craving sugar doesn't hurt you. Giving in to the craving does.

That's the idea I'm going for. I poorly phrased it.

It confuses the body though. I'd rather have a regular soda with less carcinogen, or water.

What is really great is real sugar. Not corn syrup. That is hard to find.

It depends on the brand, but soda with real sugar is widely available here. We get Coke from Mexico (in glass bottles, too).

I'm so used to aspartame I find actual sugar soda, whether real or corn, to be unpleasantly sweet. It also makes my teeth feel weird.

Pepsi sells “throwback” versions of it’s sodas.

You can also buy imported Coke and Pepsi bottled in Mexico made with sugar.
