Is anyone else here trying to run Half-Life 2: Ep. 1 on a Macbook? I can get the game to run, but it crashes out whenever it tries to autosave. I was wondering if someone has had a similar issue and if someone had a solution?

Is the GMA 950 even a supported graphics card?

Yes the game runs fine graphically. I set the direct x level down to 7 which is what the GMA 950 can handle I believe. The graphics are not the problem. Like I said in my original post the game crashes whenever it goes to write the save file, whether that is by autosave or me manually trying to save my game.

Nitpick: GMA 950 can handle all the way up to DirectX 9, albeit not in hardware. It may be very slow at it, but nonetheless it is theoretically capable of it with the right drivers.
In fact, my MacBook gets seen as a DirectX 9 machine by Windows Vista.

Yeah sorry I should have been more specific. I think the hardware level of the GMA 950 is either DX 7 or 8.

Off topic a bit, but out of interest's sake, how well does that game run if you set it for DirectX 8, but just turn down the details, etc? Is it even possible to do this? (I don't play that game.)
Just wondering.

To answer some questions: I'm running HL2E1 under Windows XP SP2 with AVG Anti-Virus. I've searched thru the steam forums looking for anything similar and had no luck but have not actually started a new thread there. All google searches so far have just turned up articles talking about HL2 running on a Macbook under Crossover Office for Mac. The game runs respectably with the DX level set to 8. I was able to run at 1280x800 with most settings at Medium. I would really like to play thru this but with the autosave causing crashes I can play for like 5 mins. between crashes.

Okay, so I went more generic with my search terms on steampowered.com and found other ppl with the GMA 950 who were having problems. I fixed the crashing by adding this launch options to Episode 1: +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +sv_autosave 0
The first one allows you to use quicksave (F6) to save w/o crashing and the second one disables autosaving. So you'll just have to remember to save more often.
This thread was the most helpful: Intel GMA950 users look here (Mac Mini, MacBook, others!) - Steam Users Forums

What about Painkiller? when I try to run it, it says "Failed to create render."
I have a 1.83 Core 1 Duo MacBook with XP Pro run via Boot Camp.

Maybe try starting a new thread specifically about Painkiller since most ppl prolly don't even read this thread unless they need or have info about Half-Life 2 issues. I think once you get more ppl looking at your question you'll get helpful response like I did!
