Got mine on Sat and I love it. The higher rez display is just gorgeous and I really like the feel of it.

Honestly, I hated the look and feel until I got a bumper. I thought it looked half-finished, and it felt like I was going to cut myself on it.

The screen is pretty mind-blowing though.

So far have not had any problems with the iPhone. I use the iFrogz case from Best Buy which works fine for me. It gets a lot of bad reviews because it does not allow for screen protection but I'm fine with that.

I ordered one for my wife on the 29th through AT&T's premier site that was giving a 7-10 day window. Hopefully it will ship sometime this week.

Re: The reception issue...We live in an area where the AT&T coverage is sketchy, at best. My wife's 3Gs has always had poor reception in our home. We're the classic "have to stand outside to get semi-reliable reception" home. As bad as it was, my wife reports that the phone is now all but useless at home, after upgrading the phone to iOS 4. It's bad enough for her to ask me if there's a way to downgrade back to the previous OS.

Totally anecdotal, sure. But she lives on that phone, so I trust her judgment when it comes to her impression of the performance.

I hope people are scared off by the reception issue. Then I might stand a chance at getting my hands on the thing! Getting ahold of one is like finding hens teeth, especially the 32gig. lol

Funny - friend of mine ordered one from Apple last week and it arrived on Tuesday. I was shocked at how fast it got there.

So not sure if this is something I'm imagining or what, but when I do that death grip thing and watch my bars drop, if I continue the death grip for a good while the bars go back up. I can replicate this. What does this mean? Anything?

I'm not sure I've seen anyone bring this up before.

Try resetting her 3GS's network settings. General > Reset > Network or similar.

Riiiight. Somehow, I don't think so.

Synopsis:
Using an AT&T Microcell for 3G coverage not only uses your internet broadband, but it will also still count against your AT&T minutes as well as AT&T's data caps. Again, even though usage is being routed through YOUR broadband connection, and not AT&T's network.

And you have to pay for the Microcell, IIRC. So basically, I"m paying AT&T for the priveledge of improving their coverage? Yeah, thinking no.

I've seen a few posts elsewhere where some people talked ATT into giving it to them or into receiving credits. Won't work for everyone. Some finesse and polite persuasion may get you $50-$75 off. Or maybe not.

Basically, using the microcell ensures that you're going to make your calls from the comfort of being inside your home, rather than huddling outside. You're using the exact same minutes, right? If you wanna ensure that you're using wifi in the home, turn the microcell off.

Now, ATT has reduced the unlimited nat'l calling plan to $70, just go that way, don't pay for the extra $20 unlimited plan.

One more thing: Of course you shouldn't have to pay to get good reception in your home. That's been in so many articles about the microcell. You think ATT cares?

On the same note, of course you shouldn't have to pay for a Bumper for the iPhone 4 if you've got one that susceptible to the antenna smothering grip. You think Apple cares?
Or: check to see if T-Mobile has better reception where you are, if so jailbreak the iphone and go that route. When you call ATT to cancel your account, you'll be tranferred to a retention specialist. Maybe you'll get a microcell for free that way, maybe not.

Of course, maybe you don't make the majority of your cell calls from home?

T-Mobile was the first national company to introduce anything like this, and they called it @Home. It worked a bit differently, but it was essentially the same - calls went through your internet connection instead of over the cellular connection. Cost? $20/mo for unlimited minutes.

If AT&T had THAT for an option I'd be all over it. But paying them extra money to use the same minutes I have now? They're out of their minds.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

What is the supposed benefit of that arrangement? What do you gain from paying AT&T more money just to expend your minutes anyway?

Edit: ah, amazing already answered that question for me.

Back when AT&T was cingular, I had TERRIBLE service in and around my house. Couldn't make a phone call to save my life. AT&T certainly wasn't going to pop a tower in my backyard to make my experience better, I might have gone this route. A one-time fee of $150 to make it better? Enough frustration and that's a pretty cheap solution.

Strangely enough, when cingular changed their name to AT&T, my service problems went away.

I saw yesterday that one of the AT&T wireless stores here will give you a $149 rebate on a Microcell if you live within a certain range of addresses up in the woods. That's pretty nifty.

Ah! That's good to hear! ATT knows where their own dead spots are and they're actually willing to discount the microcell based on living in a dead zone...

I just wish they'd publicize that more--but then they probably really, really don't want to give them away.

The current rebate at my store (in Chicago) was $100 if you sign up for the $20/month (no contract) service that gives you unlimited calling off the microcell.

Not a horrible deal.

FWIW, there's an AT&T iPhone app that you can use to send them a notice whenever you experience a dropped call, lack of service, etc. called Marks The Spot. We use it all the time. It send AT&T precise location information. There's also a comment section where you can add your own text. We use the comment section a lot.

Not that we've noticed. At least, it doesn't visibly edit anything on the user end.

See, I'm surprised/disappointed at how willingly people seem to be to just accept crap service and the "fix" of buying more equipment and then using your internet connection to make up for that crap service.
And, as mentioned, you still get dinged by AT&T toward your data cap (even though you are off their network), plus using that microcell will also ding you against your ISP's data cap. I think we'd rather chuck the iPhone and move my wife back to Verizon than play AT&T's slimy game.

From everything that I heard the iPhone 4 camera was supposed to take better pictures in low light. Personally I think the pictures that I get out of the iPhone 4 are worse than what I got with my 3G. Unless you are outside the pictures are rather grainy and the color saturation is rather high. Has anybody else had this problem or should I contact Apple?

Well, yes, choosing a cellphone should really start with finding out which provider has the best reception where you're most likely to make calls.

The problem starts when one provider comes out with a cellphone so droolworthy that people overlook the reception problems in their neighborhood--and they put up with bad reception just for the "pleasure" of having that phone.

What's a person to do? Disappoint your wife by switching her back to a Verizon crap phone--or get a microcell? Of course, if your wife is all on her own disappointed with the reception problems and volunteers to switch back to Verizon, go for it. Personally I'm of the school of thought that says "honey, look how solicitous I am of your delightful well-being that I jumped through hoops to solve your problem."

Well, the *problem* is exclusivity agreements. Apple made a deal with the devil to accelerate iPhone dissemination, but now Americans are suffering from not having the iPhone cell-provider selection that many other countries enjoy.

I don't see how an exclusivity agreement is going to accelerate dissemination.

I always thought (and was told) the purpose behind the deal was simply to take the bajillion dollars AT&T is willing to cough up.

It's Visual Voicemail.

It's pretty integral to the iPhone-as-a-phone experience, and Apple won't license it to any carrier that doesn't have a distro agreement. And the initial kick-off was to entice carriers into licensing it and building the infrastructure by giving them exclusivity.

In the U.S., there is, of course, the added factor that almost all the best coverage is on CDMA, but that wasn't an option for Apple.

sorry if it came across as patronizing. See, that one thing about it being required by work, without that I couldn't understand keeping the phone--now that I've found out it's required by work, I would've phrased it differently.

Actually it was an option, as Apple approached Verizon with the iPhone before AT&T. But Verizon wouldn't agree to Apple's terms, so Apple moved on.

So does anyone here think they'll actually do a recall?

I think 'free bumpers' is about the most we could expect, but I'm hoping that Apple won't push back the release date for other countries/the white model due to what's going on.

I hope that Apple takes the high road on this and does whatever it takes to make things right.

I'd like to see Steve say something like "We screwed up and we're sorry. Here is what we are going to do to make sure that something like this never happens again and to make sure our loyal customers are happy and satisfied. So we are announcing today a replacement program from Apple for anybody who feels their current iPhone 4 has this antenna problem. Go to our web site to register. You will be sent a brand-new replacement along with a box for shipping the old one back to us."

What he will probably say is "Free iPhone Bumpers. Go to our web site to register".

The first approach would garner so much in customer goodwill that the cost of a replacement program would be negligible in relation to the huge amount of goodwill received. Apple must protect it's brand(s). At any cost!

I hope they say the above but also that they have identified a hardware fix or solution and future batches of the phone will not have this antennae problem so I can finally order my damn phone. I've been hesitant to buy something I know is flawed like it's perfectly fine even though I know I'll put a case on the thing anyway and not have a problem.

I was at the Apple store last night being annoying that the iPad is still sold out(the only way I'll get this thing is if I walk in and on impulse buy it lol) . I went over to the phone before the iPad and played around with three of the display phones...and all did the bar drops when I put a finger over the gap...I even called myself with the phones to see if I could drop a call but wasn't able to but the phone had full 5 bars from the start and I was able to get them down to 2. I could see if you are in a slightly shotty area with maybe 3 bars that touching the gap would drop a call. I also wanted to test the speed drops/stops when browsing the web and touching the gap but everything in the store is on wifi.

Also...the display is outstanding...I kept just staring at the screen and comparing with my iPhone next to it. It really is startling to see the difference. I thought if I just upped the brightness on mine it would look closer to the 4s display..nope.

I wonder what Apple Store employees do with all the people going in to Apple Stores to touch the iPhone4's Spot of Death? Do they phase into an alternate reality where all phones have a spot where a single finger can so dramatically affect signal strength?

I wonder how many realities will collapse on Friday if Apple comes out as says "Sorry, we messed up here". There are several just in here who have fully bought into the "There is no problem/the problem is software" double-think currently being offered by Apple.

A user over on the macrumors.com forums posted this:

The iPhone 4 has been our most popular product ever. We've been excited and humbled by unprecedented sales volume of the past few weeks. It's been our biggest Apple launch ever. Millions of people are loving their iPhone 4's. Retina etc. Awesome.

We've made incredible improvements in the RF design of this device. Here are some examples of press coverage describing the iPhone 4's ability to hold onto calls in what used to be dead spots.

We understand that there have been reports of some people experiencing reception problems when the iPhone 4 is handled in a particular way. We agree that appearance of these problems is related to the "innovative" external antenna design, but this issue has been exacerbated by an error we made in how we display the bars in iOS. [Reference what was learned from Anandtech's analysis.]

We are extremely confident in the overall design of the product. So much so that today we're announcing that anyone who buys an iPhone 4 during its first 6 months can return it--no questions asked--within 30 days of purchase, with no restocking fee, regardless of which authorized reseller you bought it from. This includes the 1.7 million people who bought an iPhone 4 on launch day. We're confident you will love your iPhone.

In addition, next week we will release a software update that will (among other enhancements) do two things. 1) It will make our signal display more accurate, and 2) it will include an update to the radio equipment in the iPhone that will make it more effective at maximizing signal strength even when the two antennas are bridged by your hand.

Finally, anyone who has already bought an iPhone 4 will receive a $50 Apple Store gift card with our compliments. If you would prefer to make sure the two external antennas are never bridged by the way you hold your iPhone, you can buy a bumper or another case on us. If you don't feel you need a case for your iPhone (or if you already bought one) we hope you enjoy whatever you buy with the card.

That's all we have to announce for today. Thanks for coming. And screw Jason Chen. And also those dirtbags at Consumer Reports.
---
I would be more than satisfied with a response like this, although the $50 gift card is probably a tad optimistic (but recall for precedent the credit to existing iPhone users when the price dropped suddenly). And I bet they don't say word one about the proximity sensor issue, or the white iPhone 4.
Post is here: Mac Forums - View Single Post - Apple Holding iPhone 4 Press Conference on Friday

I think it's a great idea - just allow returns for any phone sold - because I highly doubt they'd get many returns. My phone exhibits some pretty significant signal issues when I cover the magic spot, but I also would not return the phone. It is by far the best phone I've ever owned, and one issue that I can easily fix myself isn't going to make me return it. And while I would like a free bumper or Apple Store gift card, I doubt those things will happen.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

No full recall. There aren't enough people complaining about the phone. There is a problem, and it is reproducible, but for the most part only the media is complaining. Furthermore the majority of the complaints are about signal degradation and not total loss. This is like complaining that my car only gets 28mpg when it is advertised as 30mpg. The company just chalks it up to driving habits the same way Apple will say you are holding it wrong. Performance can be affected by the end user and here Apple never made a guarantee about signal quality like my car manufacturer did.

$50 credit will not happen. $30 credit is far more likely as it is almost enough to cover the cost of a bumper if you throw in tax.

6 month return policy with no questions asked won't happen either. That would put us right into 2011 when the iphone may end up on verizon. All the holdouts would buy the phone now knowing they could return it no questions asked in 6 months and just get a new one on verizon without paying the ETF.

I agree about no mention of the proximity sensor though.
AT&T iPhone 5S and 6; 13" MBP; MDD G4.

What was posted was a 30-day return policy if you buy the phone in the first 6 months of sales. My guess is if they did this and had a Verizon phone to announce (highly unlikely), they would wait until the 7 months are over.

I think it's a fantastic idea.

No credit, no bumpers, no anything.

I just don't see users complaining about the signals doing anything to their calls. I see media reports (consumer reports) talking about signal loss, but there hasn't been a large quantity of users saying it's affecting their call quality/continuity. I DO see a lot of instances where people are able to make calls where they weren't before. I know I personally can make calls in areas where it was dropped or inable to before (big giant dead areas between Detroit and Chicago).

You mean other than people (like me) who can cause their phone to completely lose service?

Based on what I've seen on the internets, you seem to be the exception rather than the rule. Again, it's what I've seen. I haven't necessarily gone looking for it.

So what happens with your phone? is it just when you put a finger on the magic spot?

Yep. When I bridge the antennas I can cause my phone to lose service altogether. It works about 90% of the time no matter where I am (occasionally it will drop down to no bars but still hold on to service).
