I thought this was a pretty cool take on things. But I guess this lumps together every thoughtful blogger with the psychotic conspiracy theorists out there as the "Person of the Year." It's not like I've been holding my breath to see who they choose, but it's always interesting.

Sad fact: before I read the headline, I saw the Apple keyboard and monitor.

OMG, on CNN.com it says we were, "chosen over Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, North Korea's Kim Jong Il and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld."

If that's the list we were obviously the clear winner. One vows destruction of Israel, the other revenge against the world and the last is a top reason the US is stuck in Iraq. If "You" didn't win then "You" are Hitler (who actually did win Man of the Year at one point.) The Time Person of the Year is a sham. Time to watch the funny letters roll in to Time HQ.

On a serious note, I think that's exactly what's intended. It does not matter who you are, it's the collective intelligence (and non-intelligence) that impacts the world through the internet.

The person of the year is not necessarily a "good" person, but an impactful one (or as now: many).

Here's something that always bugged me growing up. Famous personalities get all the spotlight when "normal, regular people" are never praised or honored for anything. Along comes the 'net and BAM! the playing field is more even than it was before. I didn't read the article yet, but I'd bet it's TIME's way of saying that for the first time, normal, regular people can make a difference as much as someone who's famous in the traditional sense.

how come, whenever they discuss who were the runner-ups, they're always political figures? there are plenty of other people making a big impact on the world without being the leader of a nation. still, i think this choice makes more sense than some of their previous winners. they've now given it to planet earth, the personal computer, and every person in the world. i think they may have even given it to DNA one year. and really, what is a bunch of strands gonna do with all that fame?

This is a kinda silly person of the year. But if they've given it to the whole earth before I guess that's OK. And it's OK if you noticed the Apple stuff first, I did too haha. But that is one thing I really like about this here interweb of ours. It really does level the playing field.

Regardless, the leaders of the world usually will be in the running for having the most influence over it.
