Are you kidding? Even if it's a girl, her name will be "Rickey".

Congrats!

Still, though if you don't name that boy/girl Rickey I just don't know what to say.

You can't even sneak in a Richard? Ah well.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Fatherhood is one of the the best things in my life.

It's more work than I have ever done, but the rewards are amazing the first time they say (and they mean it) "daddy, I love you" unprompted.

PS: It gets easier once they learn to walk. Well, at least it gets more entertaining!

Off Topic: We named our dog "Peter Richard Johnson". But we just call him "Pete".

Congrats, it will be a wonderful experience.

My twins are due any day now, so every time my phone rings (and I'm at work) I jump thinking its "the call".

A quick piece of advice, do not listen to people who say your life is over, or kiss that goodby or your in for it now etc. Just turn the conversation back to what a great blessing this will be.

I couldn't beleive how many people were downplaying the whole thing, I understand as you do its going to be a lot work but its also going to be great. Just don't let them get under your skin.

Congratulations rickey939 on the news of your first child. An awesome responsibility, but with great joy.

Yes, Mookie as in Mookie Wilson, but he is not among the gentlemen in my sig, as he is no longer an active player.

Left to right they are, Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, Mike Piazza, and Mr. Met. It will have to be reworked soon, as Mr. Piazza is leaving shortly.

Mookie is a fine name, even for a girl.

The ESPN 25th anniversary special had a segment on children named after the channel, including one girl named Espyn (pronounced ESS-pin). Apparently, the mother told the father that he could name the child whatever he wanted, as long as the name existed in a baby book. Espyn is a perfectly valid name of (IIRC) Scandinavian origin, much to the mother's suprise. I recommend our rickey939 (if that is his real name ) make a similar deal with Mrs. goRickey.

I remember Mookie Wilson from when he played on the Blue Jays. Everybody seemed to like him, so therefore, Rickey must name his baby "Mookie".

There, it's settled!

Felicitations, congratulations, hurray, and more!

As has been noted, it WILL change your life, your relationship with the spouce, and with the rest of the world. This is generally a Good Thing©, but be prepared!

Speaking of preparedness, you cannot be too prepared for parenthood. Read, go to classes, listen to what the doc and other medical folks say, and then still expect to feel completely unprepared. You won't be, but it will feel that way.

And make sure you tell the mom to be "I'm Proud Of You©" frequently! Particularly as the date gets closer. Our son was born in late July here in Central Texas...it WAS as miserably hot as you think. Be ready to be extra attentive and extra helpful then-it pays off in a lot of ways!

The Internet has spoken! (although I think Mrs. goRickey has veto power over the Internet in this matter...)

I'll go a step further and say you really can't be prepared for parenthood! Sure, you can read up on what's about to happen and get advice from friends, and think you're prepared, but the only real way to know what's about to happen is to experience it, in regards to both the labor and delivery process and the first weeks of new parenthood. Just keep your cool, adjust to your new environment, and make sure to take time to enjoy the experience. The "expecting" stage and the "just born" stage are gone before you know it. I'm now in the "toddler climbs on chairs and does a header onto the floor almost daily" stage, which has its own challenges!

I agree with Glenn that you need to treat Mom even more special now. Assuming she's a first-time mom-to-be too, she's going to go through something she's never experienced before, which can be thrilling and scary at the same time. Comfort her and share in her joy!
