Man Out-Smarts Virginia Beach ATM
Sep 13, 2006 10:30 AM

We've heard of people being held up at ATM's. Heard of ATM machines being broken into. But it's rare we hear of them being out-smarted.

But that's what a man did in Virginia Beach and he got away with hundreds.

Now police are on the hunt for him.

Police say on August 19th, the man walked into the Crown Gas Station at 2400 Lynnhaven Parkway and re-programmed the ATM inside the store. He apparently figured out the security code that accessed the ATM and was able to make the machine think it was disbursing 5 dollar bills instead of the 20 dollar increments it was supposed to. Better yet, he did it all just a few feet from the store cashiers!

Police aren't saying how much money the man got away with, but he used a pre-paid credit/debit card and entered, for example, a $100 withdrawal. But instead of giving him 20 $5-bills, the machine gave him 20 $20-bills.

"I say he's pretty smart," said Matt Quartarao, a customer at the Crown. "But if you get caught, you get caught and it's over with."

Police do have surveillance video from the parking lot and inside the store. He is a black male, approximately 5'8" tall with a thin build. At the time of the crime, he was wearing a white T-shirt with writing on the back, dark shorts, dark tennis shoes and a red ball cap. He was seen driving a light tan dour-door car.

Many think it won't be hard to find him.

"I think someone would be able to track the him down because there aren't too many people that have that kind of experience in the electronics field to know the system like that," said John Yarrington, a Crown customer.

But here's the other twist to this story...it took over a week for other customers to report the problem!

Your NewsChannel Three tried to reach the company, Net Bank Payment Systems, based out of Jackson, Mississippi, but did not get a call back.

Police need your help identifying the thief. He was using a pre-paid debit card, so they don't have his name, but if you know who he is - you could get up to 1,000 reward and remain anonymous. Call the Crimeline at 1-888-Lock-U-UP.

====================

Impressive.

Maybe he's going to use the money to get more cheerful doors for his car?

That would NEVER happen in Utah. Seriously. Maybe one or two customers would take the money and run, but there is not even a remote possibility that it could last more than a day (or an hour) here. I'm glad I don't live in such a dishonest area.

Why did he get money the same day he manipulated the ATM ?

If he just came back two days later and cashed in like all others, it would have been harder to track him down. May just a little, but still.

Agreed. Same here.

Some people think no one is losing when something like this happens.

In my area we have a credit union that has ATMs that dispense coins... you could go make a withdrawl for $1.36 if you wanted to....

You gotta be kidding.

Is the standard of living that low ? What's the minimum wage ? 23 cent per hour ?

Since its a credit union and not a bank, only members can use the atm. Members can cash paychecks via the atm, hence the need to dispense change. ...but the standard of living is fairly low in my Rust Belt community

Unless you want to call the Virginia Beach Police Department, your guess is as good as anybody else's as to whether or not he has been caught.

Well, they might have had a story in a local newspaper about how it turned out. I dunno. Don't live there anymore.
