Since I really got out of themeing well before Panther came out, I really have no clue when it comes to editing the brushed resource in the Extras.rsrc.

I knew how to edit it in the iTunes application to the way I want it, but that doesn't produce the same results in the Extras.

I basically just want the SAME look, minus the texture like so:

Anyone have any clue as to what I am supposed to paste into the Extras resource to get the same effect?

When I tried to do the same thing to the Extras as I did with iTunes, the window just came out white.

Or is this something that requires ShapeShifter?

If I'm not mistaken, a full color metal window texture can be faithfully reproduced in Safari in Panther, but the Finder displays it with very strict color limitations (only a certain number of levels of gray). iTunes, as you've pointed out, has its own set of elements in Panther. In Tiger it appears that rather than giving color to the Finder metal window texture, it has been taken away from Safari. I haven't themed the applications, and I don't remember right off hand whether iTunes still retains its own independent metal window texture in Tiger or not.

BTW, as a theming old-timer, you might be interested in the fact that I've updated Pillowtalk-Sky to version 3 for Tiger:

http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/res/themes.html

Some of my tutorial stuff (which, incidentally, I haven't had time to update for Tiger yet) may shed a little more light on that issue. Anyway, ShapeShifter does, I believe, actually provide full color for the metal window texture wherever it's displayed. That really makes for some quite spectacular window elements.

Why don't you just use Themepark and adjust everything to your liking and export to .dlta and extract the extras.rsrc and swap.

In Themepark...... Add theme>GlobalElements>MetalWindow>Texture......... Export the texture (not the maask) into PS and drop opacity to Zero and then use TP to retrieve from PS...... for the look that you want. This will affect ALL metal windows. Excluding apps of course, since you'll only be using the extracted rsrc.

No SS used.....

I used Themechanger though...... OS 10.4

iTunes.app>Show Package Contents>Resources>iTunes.rsrc

Open iTunes.rsrc in TP and find Window Background......... change the Texture to solid white and save.

w00t, no more brushed metal.

Now everything looks like the side of a G5 tower.

I like the smooth gradient look, but disliked the brushed texture.

The only problem is now, the DVD app and the calculator app both show brushed, but I have no idea where the resource is.

will this work for you Zim?

I can't figure out the resource for it either, so I edited the .nib file to remove the texture. If you want me too I will explain it in detail., but you probably already know what I'm talking about.

[edit]
The same can be done with the DVD player.

I can't find Window Background when I open iTunes.rsrc with ThemePark. What's the ID#?

Now that I go look back, the calculator's brushed resources are gone.

But the DVD player still has them.

Sorry if I'm thick, but I'm not a Themer but hate metal and want to get rid of it. So will swapping the extras.rsrc change both the Finder AND apps? If so would someone be so kind as to post the extras.rsrc I would need?

Thanks a lot.

Here is the final non-brushed DVD player

And you can download the modified graphic files here.

Do you want to get rid of the metal, or the brushed metal?

Finder and MOST apps yes. And you can modify your own extras resource to do just that as pointed out above.

The one I did was from a hacked Smooth Stripes.

And I don't have Max's approval on giving it out.

The Brushed Metal is what I'm trying to get rid of. Or more specifically the brushed texture on the metal. I've never played with TP so this should be interesting!

Quick TP question. Does everything I change and save in TP (labels/buttons etc.) all get included in the one extras.rsrc file? I've always wanted to change those fruity label colors!
Also can I just take that extras.rsrc file and manually replace it with the one in the path explained in the earlier post (after backing up the current one)? Do I need to use Theme Changer?

Thanks.

OK so I made changes to the extras.rsrc file. Do I have to log in as root to be able to swap the file? I apparently can only read the file as an admistrator.

you have to "Get Info" on the folder that the Extras.rsrc file is in and under Ownership & Permissions change the owner to you instead of System.

i just left mine that way but i'm not sure if you're supposed to change it back everytime or not.
