Twilight was not meant to be a commercial movie. The director, Catherine Hardwicke, is an independent director that read the book, liked it and wanted to make a movie on her own. The movie was made with a very low budget (US$37 millions), which explains the cheap special effects, although it would have definitely been better if she had a greater budget.

Kristen Stewart (protagonist) is also an independent actress, and said that if she had known the movie was going to be that famous and expected, she would not have taken the role. So no, Twilight is not a commercial movie, the reason it became commercial is because of the popularity of the books.

There is no such thing as a non-commercial movie, unless it is art for art's sake (or I guess home videos), which "Twilight" is decidedly not.

And let's not trivialize $37 million. It's not Tom Cruise proportions, but it ain't indie. It's not even particularly low-budget for a non-action movie. Others in that range have been "Burn After Reading," "Star Trek: Generations," "Serenity," and "The Devil Wears Prada."

I am familiar with the work of Catherine Hardwicke and maybe, if her budget was so low and her intentions so good, she would've let someone else direct the movie. Seriously, when did they start filming it? because I'm sure that she was aware of the popularity of the series... she bought the rights of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse... what does that say to you?
As for Kristen, regardless of the type of movie she stars in, she should always give her best. Isn't acting her career? she should excel at what she does no matter what. Robert Pattinson (according to him) worked very hard to make a good Dalí in Little Ashes even when he knew it was a low budget movie with little chance of success (well, after Twilight, its chances of success have obviously increased).

Twilight is a commercial movie undercover (since, according to you, it was meant to be indie). I might be wrong, but this is what I perceived.

Now that you mention it, Twilight can be a metaphor for teenage abstinence and sexuality, but I don't see how the vampire helps in that. He is the one voting for abstinence, while she throws herself at him.

Apparently I don't. If you cease to read what people post here, you will stop suffering I guess. If people keep coming to talk about how much they loved or hated the movie, then chances are they probably won't stay for long. I own a Macbook so maybe I'll post something about it soon but people that don't own Macs won't stay around for long because 90% (?) of this forum is out of their interest.

Often, I wonder if the person even knows what lol means.

For some people, myself included, lol has lost the laught out loud definition. I might use lol to aprove or disaprove a comment, depending on the tone I say it (Yes, I say lol in real life, although not as l-o-l). It's kind of a bad habit and I'm trying to get rid of it. I use it a lot while IMing, but I try not to use it on the forums.

That's not the point. MacNN's COPPA adherence explicitly states that users under the age of 13 are required to submit via fax or snail mail a parent's written consent in order to participate here.

Unless this girl has done that, she can't participate. Period.

And to Hg2491: they don't lock threads around here. PM a mod (I think ThinkInsane is one of the Lounge mods) and ask nicely for the thread to be locked.

Bitch magazine had an interesting article about Twilight, and how the abstinence message is or isn't feminist. It surely sounds that by the last book there isn't much abstinence or feminism.

I normally like vampire lore for the feisty heroines and dark humor (buffy, early anita blake). After reading that article I don't think I want to start this series knowing how it turns out. Thank you bitch magazine for saving me some time.
