If by that you mean that I am a newcomer, you're wrong.
I've been a member of this forum for over a year but don't really have the time to be posting. I'm on vacation and I haven't any chores so
I actually forgot my password or my user name (I can't recall), so I decided to create a new account since I no longer use the e-mail address I based my rather inoperative former account on.
Hg2491 can corroborate this.

Twilight was not meant to be a commercial movie. The director, Catherine Hardwicke, is an independent director that read the book, liked it and wanted to make a movie on her own. The movie was made with a very low budget (US$37 millions), which explains the cheap special effects, although it would have definitely been better if she had a greater budget.

Kristen Stewart (protagonist) is also an independent actress, and said that if she had known the movie was going to be that famous and expected, she would not have taken the role. So no, Twilight is not a commercial movie, the reason it became commercial is because of the popularity of the books.

There is no such thing as a non-commercial movie, unless it is art for art's sake (or I guess home videos), which "Twilight" is decidedly not.

And let's not trivialize $37 million. It's not Tom Cruise proportions, but it ain't indie. It's not even particularly low-budget for a non-action movie. Others in that range have been "Burn After Reading," "Star Trek: Generations," "Serenity," and "The Devil Wears Prada."

I am familiar with the work of Catherine Hardwicke and maybe, if her budget was so low and her intentions so good, she would've let someone else direct the movie. Seriously, when did they start filming it? because I'm sure that she was aware of the popularity of the series... she bought the rights of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse... what does that say to you?
As for Kristen, regardless of the type of movie she stars in, she should always give her best. Isn't acting her career? she should excel at what she does no matter what. Robert Pattinson (according to him) worked very hard to make a good Dalí in Little Ashes even when he knew it was a low budget movie with little chance of success (well, after Twilight, its chances of success have obviously increased).

Twilight is a commercial movie undercover (since, according to you, it was meant to be indie). I might be wrong, but this is what I perceived.

I read that Twilight was nothing but a lame super-obvious metaphor for a teenagers struggle with abstinence and sexuality.

Yes? No?

What do our new gaggle of 13 year old girls think?

Does liking Twilight mean you are scared of the ding dong or what?

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I did the same. Nothing.

The only explanation is that this is a group of friends, who all decided to bust the Lounge together.

It is getting highly annoying.

Strictly speaking, "indie" should refer to any films produced outside of what used to be the golden age Hollywood studio system of the early to mid 20th century (when the technology and monopolistic business practices really did make it pretty much impossible to independently produce a film). Today, this would mean a film produced outside of the descendants of that system, what are sometimes called the "big six" and their subsidiaries: Time Warner (which includes Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, etc.), Viacom (which includes Paramount and Dreamworks), Disney (which includes Miramax), Sony, General Electric (which includes Universal Studios and Focus Features), and News Corporation (which includes 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, etc.).

So I wrote somewhat incorrectly earlier. In terms of a budget, technology today and the ability to secure co-financing from other private sources (private individuals, large independent studios like Lucasfilm, and corporations like Starbucks) means that a technically "independent" movie could have a budget just as large as a big studio film (with the exception of the huge blockbusters). Usually a big budget indie flick will be vying for a distribution deal from one of the big six subsidiaries anyway.

However, in terms of (for lack of a better term) "street cred," I think that $2 million or less would be a good ballpark figure for what I would consider an "indie" film. Here I generally hew to the Bruce Campbell stance: if you know that your film is going to be released, then it's probably not an indie.

Please PM Glenn (ghporter) and ask for the thread deletion.

Laminar hit the nail on the head: someone in a Twilight forum must have posted a link to your thread, and now all the kiddies are coming over.

Only deletion (not close) will make this hopefully go away.

Now that you mention it, Twilight can be a metaphor for teenage abstinence and sexuality, but I don't see how the vampire helps in that. He is the one voting for abstinence, while she throws herself at him.

Apparently I don't. If you cease to read what people post here, you will stop suffering I guess. If people keep coming to talk about how much they loved or hated the movie, then chances are they probably won't stay for long. I own a Macbook so maybe I'll post something about it soon but people that don't own Macs won't stay around for long because 90% (?) of this forum is out of their interest.
Is that hopeful enough for you? lol

How that ? I feel spammed by pointless lols.

Often, I wonder if the person even knows what lol means.
It just doesn't make sense when you actually add "laugh out loud" at the end of many of those sentences.

For some people, myself included, lol has lost the laught out loud definition. I might use lol to aprove or disaprove a comment, depending on the tone I say it (Yes, I say lol in real life, although not as l-o-l). It's kind of a bad habit and I'm trying to get rid of it. I use it a lot while IMing, but I try not to use it on the forums.

the whole novel this is based on is just Mormon propaganda for abstinence and bloodsucking is a metaphor for sex, what exactly is this advocating?

Um.

You are aware of COPPA regulations, right?

You're too young to be here, unless your parents have sent in written consent for you to be a member of this forum.

Hell, you're too young to be on most of the Internet, if you ask me.

Children these days go on the Internet at a very young age. I've seen 8-year-olds surfing the net with such a skill that it is scary. There must be long-term repercussions to this.

That's not the point. MacNN's COPPA adherence explicitly states that users under the age of 13 are required to submit via fax or snail mail a parent's written consent in order to participate here.

Unless this girl has done that, she can't participate. Period.

And to Hg2491: they don't lock threads around here. PM a mod (I think ThinkInsane is one of the Lounge mods) and ask nicely for the thread to be locked.

I wasn't saying otherwise Shifuimam; I was stating my concern with children on the Internet.
I don't really think it's a 13-year-old though, just someone having too much fun here.

Bitch magazine had an interesting article about Twilight, and how the abstinence message is or isn't feminist. It surely sounds that by the last book there isn't much abstinence or feminism.

I normally like vampire lore for the feisty heroines and dark humor (buffy, early anita blake). After reading that article I don't think I want to start this series knowing how it turns out. Thank you bitch magazine for saving me some time.
