I just bought my first mac. I would like to know the names of some good games. I don't like a lot of mindless blood and guts. I have a G4 (733) with a geforce 2. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to the Mac community. I personally like strategy games. I like Warcraft 2, Starcraft, and Age of Empires. I am waiting patiently for the relase of Age of Empires 2 and Warcraft 3.

No blood and no guts?

Wait for...
Baldur's Gate 2
Age of Empires 2
Myst 3
WarCraft 3
Master of Orion III

And today you can buy...
Baldur's Gate
Master of Orion II
StarCraft
Riven
SimCity 3000

If you don't mind some blood and guts, get...
Diablo II
Unreal Tournament
Quake 3 Arena
Rune
Deus Ex

And more... thought I'd limit my list to being a short one

Check out Ambrosia. They are well known for great shareware games. http://www.ambrosiaSW.com/

Risk II is also pretty good. I especially like the Same Time Risk variation.

I agree on Warcraft 2, Starcraft, SimCity 3000 and Riven (try the original Myst also -- Myst3 will be out in just a couple of weeks). I haven't tried the other games mentioned.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you have any tips for where to buy Mac games? I went to circuit city yesterday and couldn't find a single mac game. I live in the Chicago area.

Check out the sites for catalog vendors like MacWarehouse, MacConnectin, MacMall and there are others. Many of these vendors can ship it to you at nominal costs and you have your new game in one to two days.

As for retail locations, CompUSA tends to have one of the better software selections. But, I found Starcraft BattleChest (which includes the the original, the expansion pack and both strategy guides) for $30 at Walmart. It was a hybrid CD, having both Mac and Windows versions on the same CD. It pays to sometimes check in the Windows game section for hybrids no matter what store it may be. I also recently saw a 4-foot section dedicated to Macintosh at Target. They had several popular titles, but I can't specifically remember which ones.

A couple of good games sites to watch are

For blood-and-gore-less fun, try Oni from Bungie or try Driver from MacSoft. Both are awesome games

CompUSA has those games. The compusa by me actucally has people who are knowledgable about macs and have a nice Mac section . I suggest you go to their website and look for the store nearest you.

Here are a few games that don't require a big learning curve if you are not used to that type of game:

Red Jack: Revenge of the Brethren (this game is slightly old (Mac/PC in the same box, so check PC sections), but is good (it's alot like the recently released Escape from Monkey Island, which you should also definitely check out, esp w/ your phat Mac) read some mac gamers reviews of Red Jack: http://www.macgamersreview.com/redjack.html

- The X-Files
- Future Cop LAPD

(newer games)
- 4x4 Evo (might need a game pad/joystick)
- Driver ( " )
- Majesty (kinda RTS, if you are into that)
- The Sims (unique RTS where you build families and towns, a top seller)
- Risk II (strategy based like the board game)

There are also numerous other RTS and RPGs, and flight sims if you are into that. But alot of them are difficult if you are not used to playing that style game.

I definitely recomend RedJack and Monkey Island, they are fun games.

Also, if you don't mind a bit of violence, the Myth series is cool becaue it is a unique, easier RTS that involves adventure and strategy.

You can see what some other Mac gamers who have played these games had to say about them at: http://www.macgamersreview.com/index.html

There are also editiorial reviews all over the net.

Have fun!

Amazon has an Apple software section (games) as well.
Go to www.dealprovide.com first and look up codes (free shipping,
10$ rebates on purchases of 50$ etc.), makes Amazon prices
pretty competitive after that.

I can't wait for MooIII, I simply can't! But unforchantly MooII does not work with my computer (DP G4 450, 448 RAM, the rest is stock) the colors are all f***ed up and it freezes and takes my system down within 30 minutes. But it is still one of my favorite games ever.

Tallyhawk
Here are some games that no one else has mentioned: Rail Road Tycoon II, Heros III complete, Alpha Centari/Ailen Crossfire, and of course for all of your favorite arcade classis get some emulators. And of if you are upgrading to X, Mega Mine Sweeper, Cow Catch Game, and more shareware games are coming out by the day. There are also count less amounts of shareware games and such for Classic aka OS 9.
Enjoy! :-D

Hmmm... have you upgraded it to version 1.6 ?
Runs fine for me (DP450/128MB/OS9.0.4).

Search www.download.com or www.versiontracker.com .

I'm surprised no-ones mentioned Myth yet...
Being a wargame it does have some much blood, but it is kind of comic book and from a distance. If you like Tolkien-esque type stuff you'll enjoy the characters and storyline.
In Myth 2 :SoulBlighter you can enable a no-blood option.
Myth is real challenge, and has levels from pretty tough, to near impossible. One of my favourite games of all time!

You might also want to check out eBay for some good deals on Mac games. In fact I work with this not-so-ethical guy who likes to buy games on ebay, burn copies of them, and then sell them on ebay. He gets all his games for free--I know, it's really unethical but I'm just telling you this to illustrate the great availability of games at eBay.

I bought Unreal Tournament at Barnes and Noble bookstore, they don't have many Mac games, but the ones they have are good. Good prices, too.

You've got an excellent gaming machine for a Mac...with the write combining on your Powermac you will be able to use the GeForce 3 to it's full potential. The nice thing about the G4 is that Id is SUPPOSEDLY going to enhance Quake 3 for altivec, so it will positively scream on your Mac.

If you ever get into blood and guts games then email me and I'll give you some pointers on gameplay or whatever

Does anyone know which Lucasarts Adventure games made it to the Mac? I know Monkey Island is out for the Mac, but what about the early Indy games, Sam and Max, Full Throttle etc? There were some real corkers before they started churning out the Episode one games left right and centre.

I guess Leisure Suit Larry doesn't have any Mac renditions either eh?

If you are into Star Trek, give Voyager: Elite Force a try... Pretty cool game. A shooter that actually has a story and a story line better than some/most Voyager episodes

Myst III Exile-

No blood, no guts, awesome grafix, decent puzzles.
At the end of each level(Age) is a ride, wild enough to make you hurl.
I like roller-coasters.

It's a power hungry game but a 733/GeForce2 should be able to handle it.
I have a DP500@550/Radeon and it plays beautifully.

Yes, Myth 2 is great fun. I just wish I had a fast computer and bigger screen when it first came out. Playing myth 2 with a huge 21" touchscreen monitor would have been fantastic. I just like the idea of circling your troops with your finger and telling them where to go ....like playing tin soldiers all over again.

Monkey Island 1, 2 & 4 (The best)
Day Of The Tentacle (Oh, so hillarious...still love it to this day)
Sam & Max (Also a laugh)
All leisure suit larry games made it to the mac (except of course number 4, which didn't make it to any platform).
Full Throttle (Although I've never played it...anyone still got a copy?)
King's Quests series
Hero's Quest series
Space Quest series (at least the first ones...)

Can't testimony to how many of them work this day. Early games might even require b/w macs (Space Quest p.e.). I know DOTT broke with Mac OS 9, which is a real shame. Good thing I still keep my 6100 & Quadra 700 at hand (almost...)

Nobody mentioned Escape Velocity in this thread? I can't believe you've missed out on the best and most expandable game of all time. (To a certain extent it's sequel Escape Velocity Override too). And now we're all waiting for EV: Nova, it's threequel. It's an exiting time to be a mac-gamer in.
