Just wanted to let you guys know that last week I returned my G5 DP2.0 because of noise issues (chirps and wavy fan...) I exchanged it for a DP 1.8 and everything is perfect! No chirps etc, In fact this thing's fans are alot quieter. Plus, what a bonus when they credited my card for 700.00 canadian!

I was lucky that the 1.8 came out just in time for my exchange.

Don't be affraid order one...or many!

I've got one, but I still have the chirp from the power supply and the chirp when copying over the network.

I'll bet it's the 9600 video card you have that is creating these noises. Most of the time when poeple are complaining about the noises they have that card.

I have the 5200 and no problems.

The chirps are definitely caused by the ATI cards. Even the rage card in my TiBook has the same issues

I had the chirp in my 9800 on my G5 when i first got it. I installed CHUD and turned off nap, and it went away.

What's really odd though is that when you reboot, nap gets turned back on, but my chirp never came back when that happened.

Oh well, happy day.

Odd. The 9600 is fanless. I have one in my dual 2.0GHz, and aside from the standard CHUD-fixable chirping, my machine is very quiet.

Cadaver, it's not a fan on the video card creating the "chirping". It's sorta like a component on the video card that isn't shielded and transmitting noise to the rest of the board...so eventually it gets to the D-A audio converter.

The fan oscillating noise is a whole other problem.

I agree on that ATI-Chirp thingy... the weird thing is that it seems to happen only on dual-processor systems. e.g. even my dual xeon doze with a 9800 pro has the same problem - loud chirps whenever i copy something over the network. i checked for irq-conflicts and stuff, nothing wrong with it.
swapped the card with a nvidia 5900 ultra - booyaa, the chrips were gone. weird.

Anyone know if the chirps also occur on the retail 9800 cards as well? If it does, I hope they will sort it out before the next revs of the G5's (which I will buy)

I've got the 9600 in a dual 1.8 that arrived last week... no chirps as far as I can tell.
