the specs of the new PB's have me considering upgrading from a rev.B 12", but am i right in assuming that the 128mb VRAM on the 15" and 17" models is a BTO order only? no walking into a local Apple store and carrying one home? i'm a big fan of instant gratification..!

MUST. SUPPRESS. UPGRADE. URGE. Any other upgradaholics out there? The drop in price makes this a doable upgrade. Sell the old one for 2300, then buy the new, top of the line one, with all of the bells and whistles, at educational discount for 2589. Transfer the ram over, clone the drive, and boom! MUST. SUPPRESS. UPGRADE. URGE.
Hello, my name is Tom and I am an upgradaholic.

I have the Rev. A 15". I don't think I'll upgrade until the rev. b G5 comes along.

at first, i was heavily tempted to upgrade again, even though i JUST bought my pBook (used, off of ebay, so i couldnt return to apple or anything like that). but, then i decided to stick with what i have. i already have bluetooth, AE, and 1.25gb of RAM. rather than selling what i have, ordering a new one, and going thru all of that trouble ... i'm going to just stick with what i have. must ... resist ....

The upgrade for the 12" isnt worth the extra money to me...A little jealous of the 64MB video card.
Im just a little mad the 12" iBook is just as fast for $150 less than what I paid, well atleast I have DVI=)

Amazon has the previous generation 1 ghz G4 superdrive powerbooks for 1499.
New 1.3 gigs are 1799.
So..for 300 bucks more...
1.3 ghz versus 1 ghz
60 gig drive versus 40 gig drive
Airport Extreme included versus buy your own card.
decisions, decisions, decisions. I was going to wait for at least a 1.4 gig G4 12" laptop..but the 1.3 is close enough.
I have a 500 mhz g3 ibook now.
So if either the 1gig or 1.3 gig g4 will both be a vast improvement..
HOWEVER..my questions:
can someone explain to me the difference 256MB DDR333 PC 2700 SDRAM on the new 1.3 gig 12" powerbooks versus
256MB DDR266 SDRAM on the old 1 gig powerbooks?
What does the new type of sdram do, and how is it better?

Does the SuperDrive model support DVD-RWs? No mention on the tech specs page...

And, can you read DVD+RW's through Toast on the PB superdrives? Writing them would be even better.

I disagree. The current lineup "matches" the G5 pro styling, and it's a relatively new form factor. I would expect them ship the G5 in the same cases, unless a redesign is required from a technical standpoint.

With Titanium the complaints were scratches, dents, and peeled paint. Not much has changed, IMO.

The shape is near perfect, but I certainly wouldn't say that about the material, think of the number of dented/scratched/corroded casing posts there have been on this forum. I'd prefer a return to titanium, but with better grade metal this time.

Yeah, short of going back to plastic, these will stick around... then it will be cracks and more scratches.

The new 12" PB uses a 167MHz bus, thus the need for DDR333 (aka PC2700) RAM. The previous models used a 133MHz bus (DDR266 RAM, aka PC2100). Faster bus speeds = more data throughput = faster overall computing.
FYI, the current G5 desktops use PC3200 DDR400 RAM.

I bought the first 17" that came out @ 1Ghz. I was glad to see the jump to 1.5 and better graphics. I will be replacing my now 1 year old 17" with the faster model.

Well - officially purchased a 1.5 GHz, 15" PB. Now I just have to wait for it to ship. According to my order, it says it'll ship in 3-5 business days. Any bets on whether it actually ships in that time frame?
On another note, this is my first "top-of-the-line" computer purchase from Apple. My old 400 MHz pismo came from a trade-in program on the PB (itself purchased used), and before that a decidedly lack-luster PM 7200. So - this seems like a kind of inauguration into post-OS-X Apple.
Anyone else making this kind of an upgrade feel this way? It's a huge generation jump.

No upgrades for me, I just got my 1.25GHz 15" PowerBook in December and I'm loving it. If a G5 PB comes out in the next year to two, I'll think about it, but until then, this baby rocks!

Pismo's a great machine, but 8MB of vram and a flaky power chip is starting to wear on its usability. Still - I love it, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it afterwards, but i'm really looking forward to an updated machine.

Having the same thoughts about the exact same machine (G4-upgraded Pismo). It's a great machine but is showing it's age when doing image editing in Photoshop.
Anyway, clicked the green button and am looking forward to a new Apple, but I'll be keeping my beloved Pismo (I'll figure out a use for it).
