Hello all,
I have an Apple MacBook 13.3" polycarbonate (white) laptop, model A1181 that has screen brightness issues when opening and closing the lid of the laptop. When the computer is turned on (with the lid wide open, as usual), I can see the screen at a very dim level. The level is very close to the same level when you turn the brightness all the way down using the F1 and F2 keys when a MacBook is on. You can still see what is on the screen, but just at a very dim level. Anyways, when the laptop is closed about two-thirds of the way, the screen comes back up at it's normal brightness. But, when I open it back up, it goes back to being very dim. I don't think anything is wrong with the LED screen itself, as the screen is displaying every pixel perfectly.
Any ideas?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Inverter is going bad, or there is wear and tear on the cable causing it to short out.
I would get it to a shop and have them take a look.

sounds like wear and tear on the cables where they go thru the hinge.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I ended up ordering a new inverter board off of eBay, and i got to replacing it yesterday with some, but not much difficulty. As soon as I replaced it, re-installed the clutch board, I powered the machine on, everything worked fantastically.
But, (here's the consequence of doing this yourself) after I put it all back together (screws and all), the thing did not turn on. I have dismantled the thing all the way to where the only thing I have not taken out of the chassis is the logic board probably four times now, but still I cannot get it to turn on.
The weird thing is that I hear no chimes, see no lights coming on (including the ALS), and I hear nothing in the machine when the power button is pressed. I've tried resetting the PRAM, the SMU, etc., and still nothing. I'll do some more diagnosing (if at all possible) today, but more than likely, I'll end up taking it to an authorized Apple repair center.
I have to take the machine in to an Apple repair center anyways, as they will be replacing the top case on my MacBook since it has about 5-6 hairline cracks on it, and they said they would do a free diagnostic. We'll see what happens.

Sounds like a loose connection. Did you check the connection between the Magsafe board and the logic board? Does it charge its battery when reassembled?
Otherwise could be the top case ribbon cable. Some of these can be shorted into life using a pair of solder pads on the board. They will be marked "PWR" if they are there.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Good day, everyone. I just wanted to give the people who helped me in this debacle an update. When the technician at the Apple authorized repair center that I took it to replaced the top case and display bezel, he got it to turn on just fine. He told me that the circuit going from the power button on the top case to where the actual power button is pressed underneath was in bad shape (maybe from me taking the top case off nine times), and when he replaced the top case, everything worked perfectly.
The machine seems to be working great for the meantime.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
