Is it possible to shut a computer off by using SSH to access it, and giving some sort of command? Any help appreciated.

I haven't tried it myself, but what about "sudo /sbin/shutdown now"?

Yes, it is -h.
It is important also the you precede the command with sudo, otherwise you will be denied.

If you're logged in as root... just type halt.... if not, sudo halt... the quickest way.
