Whether you have children or not. I saw this on another forum a while back and thought it'd be interesting to see the responses here.

It could be a serious "Thou Shalt Not..." or of the more whimsical "Watch out where the Huskies go..." variety. Whatever you think would be the wisest thing to pass on.

Personally, I think something to do with personal responsibility. How we're ultimately responsible for our own beliefs as well as our own emotional and physical states. I really don't have it boiled down to a pithy statement yet. Seeing as I don't have children, it hasn't been a priority.

Learn how to respect, be temperate. There's too many virtues to be taught. I think a good way would be to show them movies or give them books to read. (movies like requiem for a dream and maybe reservoir dogs).

Video games are a sad waste of time. Go live life, don 't diddle around with your thumbs in front of some screen all day.

And don't be touching my stash...

Self-respect. Most self-destructive, anti-social and foolish bahavior is the result of people who simply don't value themselves enough. They want to be things they are not. Giving in to peer pressure is simply a matter of valuing what others think of you more than what you think of yourself.

Too many people define themselves by how others see them rather than really knowing themselves and loving themselves.

I second this.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you but remember to do unto yourself as well.

It combines cjrivera and T_F's sentiments. Respect yourself and others. Once you do that, many things become easier.

Or, from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut:
"Dude, you just have to have confidence in yourself. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you. Chicks love confidence."

To think that there is one best most important thing to teach your kids that will shape their lives belongs in the pop-quick-fix-reader'sdigest-microwavedinner consumerist attitude to our lives. There is no one thing - I have a 9 month old and he is lapping everything up that we give him. The music, love, attention - its too ealry to teach values but we are learning that if we practice best values at this stage, then our son will absorb these over time.

... oh, and never turn your back on a Sicilian.

Well, "Don't bite your brother" has to be right up there.

But seriously, I agree with the Golden Rule people. Teaching empathy has got to be one of the most important things we can do as parents.

We're cool.

You just never know what someone really means when they post. Sometimes it's easy to misjudge intent.

1. Do as I say, not as i do (at least until you're old enough for me not to whip yo ass if you get outta line, or you can out run me).

2. Do unto others, etc. Karma works in a circle.

3. Do the best you can at everything, it matters even for the things that you think don't. If you don't know how, learn... then apply.

4. Everything you do has a consequence... wether it be good or bad, be it sooner or in the long run. Think before you act.

5. School/The system (not knowledge/personal education mind you) is overated (but really leave this one for a later age, so that they don't disregard #3).

6. Teachers aren't always right/think for yourself. Question everything you know, learn, hear, read etc, even things I taught you, including these. Make up your own mind.

7. Dont eat yellow snow

Single most important lesson to teach your children?

That you are never too busy to make time for them.

Giving them your time lets them know that you love them...that you value them...builds their character...helps their self-esteem...

And the list goes on and on.

Too many parents think that their kids are doing fine because they have the latest toys and gadgets, belong to all kinds of sports teams and clubs, and appear to be fulfilled. But the truth is that their kids need more of their time because television, media, and their peers are influencing their decisions more than their parents do simply out of lack of contact with their parents.

Good topic.
