So if Apple put it up for sale does that automatically mean AT&T gave the okay, as well? $10 is a little much for this, I think. $5 seems more fair, so I I'll wait this one out.

I've really, REALLY, REALLY missed having tethering when I moved from a Nokia to the iPhone last September. I'm going to give it a try and will post back in a little bit and tell you guys how it goes.

Oh well, scratch that .... it won't let me download "app no longer available". Guess it did throw up some sort of red flag with AT & T. It's not listed anywhere on the developer's site either

Considering you had no chance to test drive it, how do you know it sucked?

It still required you to set up a Wi-Fi ad-hoc network on your computer and change proxy settings and all that, just as on the set-up for jailbroken iPhones.

I'd love for an app to just open up, connect with computer, done.

Or like with every other phone, connect via Bluetooth using connection data available on the providers' websites. (BTW, I've never had a problem tethering my laptops to cellphones - is blocking this functionality a North American provider thing? I'm not aware of any such contractual limitations here...)

Tethering is allowed on Rogers in Canada so I don't see why we can't have apps like this.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm pretty convinced it is Apple that does not want people using their iPhone to tether. Apple wants you to browse the web and read your mail with the iPhone, not over the iPhone. Not that I agree with that notion, but I'm pretty sure that's what Steve thinks.

Basically you want Apple to make an App or just include the functionality then. I think your idea is good. Unfortunately, I think mduell is right. Apple won't include tethering, unless they totally redesign it and how it's done.

The faster Flash-only web-sites die a horrible death, the better.

However, on occasion it's just vital to be able to send and receive attachments from a computer.

I realize that this is only relevant for a small percentage of users, and that even for us, the iPhone can handle 90-95% of our on-the-go internet needs. But it still angers me a little.

Yeah, I just bought it.
Very surprised to see it back up in the Appstore.

Yes, it works. It’s the only way to tether a vanilla iPhone without any modifications, so yes I would say it is worth it.

It feels like a dialup-simulator on my old EDGE phone but hey... better than nothing.
My only worry is that Apple will pull it to then render it unusable in a future software update. hopefully that won’t happen but it isn’t entirely unlikely.

Oh yes. Just got it. I am going to the cottage tomorrow for a week and up there we have no phonelines. But EDGE works.

They'd have a very hard time breaking it. It uses standard technology.

Looks like it was pulled again.

As for Apple having a hard time breaking it, I highly doubt that.
1-2 lines of code that check for that particular application and kill it when it’s running is enough — Nullsoft won’t be able to update the app and Apple will make sure to never let anything like slip through again.

More than anything else this is a tug of war between Apple Legal and at&t Legal.

Read the part of your 75 page (ok, it's a little less) at&t 3g legals on "Tethering."

Hopefully someone will make it available or duplicate its functions for the jailbreak community.

I am using it right now. We're at our cottage in the middle of nowhere, but I do get EDGE reception. I am extremely glad that I managed to snag a copy when it was up for a couple of hours yesterday, I had missed it the first time around.

Ya, I snagged it just in time, too, and it works like a charm. Hopefully it'll get reposted so that more people can make the most of their data network.

This is great!

Now I can tell all those Wi-Fi providers at various airports around the country to take a flying leap!

This and VNC Lite are very nice apps.

Hey, thanks for the tip on VNC! I can't wait to get to work to try that out.

Wait, did I just say that?

Has been for a while now:

http://cre.ations.net/blog/post/how-...ing-your-3g-co

This thing was just a two-step simplified solution that didn't require jailbreaking.

And I really don't want to jailbreak.

Well, with Netshare, I have been successfully able to get safari (No probs whatsoever here) and iChat to work. No luck on Mail.app and most importantly for me, iCal (Since I need to publish my calendars).... sigh... iCal is actually most important for me! I think it's a matter of just getting the program to recognize the SOCKS proxy info or some setting related to it. I just don't know how to do it..

NetShare is only a port 80 proxy, AFAIK.

So any app that communicates via different ports (e.g. Mail) won't work.

Couldn't you VPN over port 80 to a regular network? Then everything should work fine.

Is this a limitation of the approach itself or is this something the developers could easily change in a future version (assuming there will be one)?

In principle I could run an ssh connection over port 80 to a Mac at home and then tunnel everything on the tethered Mac through that, but that's a somewhat painful solution. It would be nice, if you could have everything run through the NetShare tether.

See, I don't really know how to do any of that unless there were detailed step by step instructions. Hopefully, Netshare will be back and have good updates coming. On nullrivers site, they did state yesterday that they have been in contact with apple and that they were working with nullriver to get netshsare back up... we'll see..
