yikes...no one? ah well, found an app ("mirage") but it left a huge rectangle hovering around the dock.

why doesn't apple allow some customization after all these years??!!

Maybe make copies of the 2D background files, then delete everything in them in an image editor? The resulting files would have the same dimensions, but would contain nothing but transparent pixels. I think someone made the 3D dock transparent that way awhile back?

Like you said, I've heard of people trying it, but I've never heard of it working right ("huge rectangle").

Try superdocker. I use it and it's cool as ****. It might do what you want.

Try to use the program called docker. I think it has the functions your looking for.

For all the people still annoyed with the wanky 3d (and 2d option) dock:

Blazedragon has made a brilliant installer (with uninstaller) for a completely transparent dock.

I was so happy with it after finding it after countless hours of search, that I donated to the guy for his excellent work. He has fixed the early hitches with the rectangle above the dock..... it's just great!

Get it here: http://www.dockulicious.com/docks/view/Mirage

If you ever come across a solution to change the colour in the ugly gray title/task bars, could you let everybody know please.
