We all know that the Superdrive found in the high end macs can read and write CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and read and write DVDs and DVD-Rs. But now some places around the internet are ciaming that the superdrive can actually write DVD-RWs too.Macfixit
What do you think? Tell me what you know!

An Apple TIL article said something like "the Superdrive may be used with DVD-RW media, but it has not been tested." Implying that they don't even know if it works, but it is technically supposed to.

Just to confirm a little of what others have been saying--straight from the horses mouth:
Pioneer's DVD-R

Also, all that is required, I believe is the software to be able to erase the DVD-RW. Keep an eye on Toast.

QuickSilver G4 867/ 640 RAM/ 60GB HD/ GeForce 3/ SuperDrive/ Airport/ SoundSticks/ 15" Apple Studio Display

tg,

Pioneer produces several high-end DVD-R drives ($4000-$6000+), as well as the new consumer DVR-A03 model (which Apple calls the "Superdrive") that offers both DVD-R and DVD-RW. At this time, the $999(MSRP) DVR-A03 is the only DVD writer available under $4000. When this drive was released in January (and the same may still be true), the DVD-RW standard was still in flux. Pioneer said it would release a firmware update to support the final DVD-RW standard, if necessary.

I think you're a tisch confused. Pioneer has a DVD-RW General drive and a DVD-R Authoring drive. The former is the Superdrive...the latter will set you back the cost of a new G4 with the Superdrive
