Is the Superdrive capable of burning dual layers? Or is this a software matter (namely Toast)?

Please tell me all you know.

By dual layer, if you're talking about the dual sided (dvd-10), there are very few burners (if any) that'll burn it without flipping the dvd over. If you're talking about commercial grade DVDs (dvd-9) then it's not possible because they are pressed not burned.

One of the manufacturers (was it Pioneer?) did announce an optical drive that was capable of burning (not pressing) a dual-layered disc, but right now they're a ways off from us being able to go buy them at retail stores for $100. Eventually they'll be available though. Everything's possible eventually.

Maxell had made an announcement a while back about 7-9 GB DVD-R media, but the news has since been pulled from their site. A double sided disk will burn in the superdrive, you just have to flip it over.
people ruin everything....

I think the DVD-9 you speak of is correct. Have you seen any of the Criterion Collection DVDs? It reads "DVDL" on the inner ring part of the disc. Anyway, these Criterion DVDs are HUGE, usually amassing much greater than the 4.7 GB DVDs for sale.

Dual-layer pressing, huh?

It was Philips I was thinking of, not Pioneer. Here's some more information (press release and diagram):
