It seems like all of my favorite sites are out for the count right now!
I know I know... ResEx has been down for a while, but the three below seemed to be the ones that had at least daily changes, and now they are nadda.

The New ResExcellence ~ The place for all things mac GUI. - redesigning...
MacThemes 2.0 - A New Chapter - redesigning...
[Customize.org] Download Skins, Themes, Wallpapers and Icons for Windows from the original skin site! - redesigning...

Where to go now for the daily dose?
InterfaceLIFT
Pixelgirl Presents Free Icons, Desktops and Gallery Shop!
deviantART: where ART meets application!

Have a good day y'all

I would hardly call the few odd posts announcing an icon or desktop image as being "alive and well"

Floundering:
flounder 1 |ˈfloundər| verb [ intrans. ] struggle or stagger helplessly or clumsily in water or mud : he was floundering about in the shallow offshore waters. • figurative struggle mentally; show or feel great confusion : she floundered, not knowing quite what to say. • figurative be in serious difficulty : many firms are floundering.

How ever you want to look at it... These sites are tehSux0r right now....
Foundering works too though. So, they are Flounderingly™ foundering.

but it looks like they're not accepting new memberships - that doesn't sound like its alive and well.

I'm curious to know how long macthemes has been shut down to renovate.

there's a couple of gems out there if you look hard enough.
the updated version of photopro while an existing theme is nice, the re-release of gerrit's work is welcome and refreshing, and there actually seem to be themes being shown at macthemes that aren't just mods of aqua and not all of them are nico this or nickel that either.

you just have to look and if you can't find anything you like take the plunge and create/mod a theme of your own. its really not that hard. its actually more tedious than anything else, but the reward is well worth it if you come up with something dinstinctly yours and usable.

I wish there was a community that was huge for OSX GUI. I frequent here and MacThemesForums but there's not a lot going on..

It's funny, I found MacNN because I lurk on GUI customization forums and this one seemed the best.

(Mind you, I never actually customize my own OS, except for the icons. I just like seeing what others are up to.)

You know, there was a huge rennaissance of gui customization and computer art in general between 1993 and 2003, but since then everything is shutting down..sites are closing, downloads are being removed, and new art is becoming repetitive..
Even in OSX, where a few years ago there were several formats themes could come in, including an open source model, now it's shapehifter or nothing..all the DLTA themes have been removed (just try to find even *one* on InterfaceLift), Duality is almost forgotten..
And if your Mac is still running OS9 you can count yourself lucky if you have Kaleidoscope, cuz your not ever gonna see any new Appearance Themes (except from a couple of us diehards)..and good luck finding any old ones..
You know, in the PC world even the Windows 3.1 community has been hanging on strong, and not letting it die - the Calmira (a win95 skin for 3.1) site is still up, for instance.
But if a Mac user wants to find a two year old theme, all I can say is good luck..
So what are we doing wrong, as members of the mac community, and shouldn't we be doing something about it?

there should be a money incintive,to theme osx is a nightmare-to skin windoze is much easier it seems-we as mac freaks of gui should be willing to let these themers get more than nice comments. It will never change unless talented people get money for their efforts.

MacThemes may be making the 2.0 release, but I won't be holding my breath.
