His name is Rio. He's about 8 weeks old and a veritable bundle of joy! We're taking him for his first dip in the ocean this afternoon. Can't wait to see him splashing around. I forgot what a calming effect dogs have. I think my blood pressure dropped 10 points the minute I saw him. Looking forward to many years of doggy happiness. I've had Goldens before and they make such wonderful pets.

LOL... So far he's been a good boy but I'm sure those razor teeth of his will do their fair share of damage. He has a great temperament... totally laid back. I put his first collar and leash on yesterday and he didn't fuss at all.

Thanks for sharing the picture. One of the few dependably positive things in the world is still a cute puppy, especially a Golden Retriever.

Lovely puppy.

I can tell it's DR because of the floor and the doors. So characteristic of Dominican houses!

It was in Atala in Santo Domingo. Just up the street from the Presidente factory. Made for a long day trip from Punta Cana.

He's pretty smart too. At 4 months he's totally housebroken and knows all the main commands (sit, stay, down, come, off, etc). We certainly lucked out. My last Golden was a little short in the brains department. I think he must have been dropped on his head once or twice.

I used to say that 99% of it is up to how well the owner(s) train the dog, but I've been proven wrong several times -- individual dog's personalities and intelligence absolutely make a difference. You might've lucked out a bit, and I'm definitely certain we lucked out with ours.

Rio is absolutely beautiful. Keep posting some pics from time to time!

Absolutely. Our last dog (‘our’ referring here to me and my parents, when I lived at home) was very much in the slow department. Slow, lazy and stubborn, he was, and with the intelligence of a gnat in heat. But sweet when he wanted to be, and never mean.

The one my parents have now, on the other hand, is highly energetic (for a Newfie, that is) and quite smart, too. And not so bloody stubborn all the time, so you can actually train her!

Thanks to Oisín being the last one to post in this thread, I made an interesting mental connection: my sister-in-law named her puppy Oisin.

Though you'd all be fascinated to know that.

[edit: clearly Andi's post wasn't there yet when I wrote this...]

Dare I ask, somewhat off-topically, if she knows how to pronounce it, too?

And what kind of puppy is it? Good name for a puppy, but only if it’s fawn.

Awww so cute. I just picked up a pair of baby Rats that are 5 weeks old. So far they are scared of the cat and the dog lol. All babies are cute and lovable. If I didn't live in a apartment I would get another dog but as a puppy so my current one would have something to play with.

Well, she speaks Irish Gaelic (to some extent, at least) so I'm assuming her pronunciation is good. (Roughly like 'ocean', or at least that's how it sounds to me.)

He's a mutt, not sure what breeds are in there, but I think fawn would probably be a good description of his coloring.

Indeed?! That’s a rarity. Tell her from me that tá ainm an-deas ar fad ar a coileán madaidh.

(Too many people tell me my nick is said like Oy-zinn or something. It ain’t! ‘Ocean’ is a good rough approximation of a southern pronunciation; my [northern] pronunciation is pretty much like ‘machine’ without the m)

Yeah, if she actually speaks the language, I’d expect that. ‘Oisín’ is a diminutive of os, which means a doe or a fawn.

Edit: Sorry about the derailing, folks. Let the puppiness continue!

How can anyone not like puppies? Although oddly enough, here in the DR the majority of people are terrified of dogs... even little puppies. It's kind of funny to see grown men run scared from a 20 pound ball of fluff and drool.

If you ever decide to sell Rio for some ridiculous reason, please consider how happy he'd be romping around northwestern Louisiana with a potential buyer.
