So is this hack safe at all? I mean it is replacing two kernel extensions, that if those cause any problem they are going to probably take the whole system down. Who knows how much Apple changed in there and what are its relationship with other part of the OS.

Just wondering.

My previous question is too difficult to answer? I am just curious if any tests had been done with this to make sure it won't break more things it can fix.

I have PowerBook G4 12" rev. A and just want to now that before blindly changing two kernel extensions.

What I am most concerned about is about the possibility that the two kernel extensions in 10.3.2 have more changes than the temperature fan control, so reverting back could cause problems.

Again, just wondering.

Sorry I didn't address your question. There have been no further tests to see if this would disrupt any other system processes other than fan system control. This is a use at your own risk software. I am only presenting you with the option. So far, there have been no negative side effects reported from anyone that has downloaded it and used it and my PowerBook has been running fine and silent since I replaced these files 2 days ago.

Also, version 1.1 contains an uninstaller so if you start to notice any sort of problems, the uninstaller will remove the two files installed with Silent Night, and it will replace them with the 10.3.2 kext files.

So why do you guys think this is a "problem". So many people bitch that the powerbooks are too damn hot to touch sometimes and when Apple pumps up the fan to make it run cooler you think THAT is a bigger problem.

It is a no win situation with you guys.

To do it right would involve a slider in a prefpane saying " more heat --- ^ --- more noise"

It's not the same people that are bitching about the heat AND the noise, when there is more noise, the noise people complain. When there is too much heat, the heat people complain. There's no pleasing any large group. That's like looking at large groups of people and trying to make them all agree on the same point of view.

Lol. Exactly.
I'd love to know a bit of .kext programming though (if there's in fact a bit knowing .kext progamming). Just to program the fan thresholds on my Ti 867. Now I work in an always air-conditioned place so I have bigger noise worries, but at "silent nights" they (=the fans) drive me nuts.

Thanks iDriveX for this little jewel...I have had a serious fan problem with 10.3.2 as well; however, I'm on a TiBook 667 DVI 15" model and not the Rev A 12" AluBooks...so, not sure what is going on, but this patch fixed my issue as well...
