Is there a way to get info on multiple items for size on disk without get an individual window for each item? Sometimes I want to see how large five files are in the same directory, but then I end up having to do math to add up the file sizes just to find out.

Select all 5 items and then do Get Info.

Select all five items and use Cmd-Opt-I. This brings up the Inspector window, which is a hold-over from NeXTStep and used to be the only way to Get Info on OSX until people complained that it wasn't OS9-like enough. Some differences between the Inspector and the 'normal' Get Info window:
  • The Inspector is a palette, rather than a proper window; as such, it always floats over Finder Windows (including other Get Info windows). Note that it disappears if you switch to another app, though it comes back if you switch back.
  • As you highlight different items (or groups of items) in the Finder, the Inspector window will automatically change to reflect this. If you select two items, the Inspector will show info for the two items collectively.
  • The Inspector only operates on the frontmost window, or the active column in Column View. If you switch to a different window or column, the Inspector will change to suit.
  • You can only have one Inspector window open at a time. Hitting Cmd-Opt-I again will close the Inspector.
