What do you pay for a haircut?

My wife cuts my hair, so I haven't paid for a haircut in at least 13 years. Last one I had was a little over $20 + tip at a Regis Salon (which I think is a chain). I never knew if they charged different prices for different hair. My hair is thick, but not long.
So what do you pay? And are you pleased with what you get for the price?

$13 + tip, in chinatown. The place is a bit of a dump, but the quality of the haircut is the same as a $30 haircut elsewhere, it includes wash and blowdry, and they give you a good scalp massage too.
My colleague pays $55 + tip at some boutique, despite the fact he's half-bald anyway.

$0 as I do it myself. I have done so for 5 or 6 years now. I keep my hair the same length all over my head so I can give myself a quick haircut with electric clippers in about 10 minutes. Trimming the back of my neck is sometimes hard but I make do. The only time I go to a barber is if I have to attend a wedding or funeral and need to look smart. But then, I won't pay more than $15 (tip included).

Tipping hairdressers? Serious odd culture.
I pay $45 for a haircut every six weeks, $130 for foils as well every 3-4 time.

$0. Realized 7 years ago that I was paying $13 for my barber to use 3 or 4 different lengths on his electric trimmer and that I could get a decent trimmer for $30.

Oh yeah, and that includes massage chair, shampoo+scalp massage and free beer and wine
Australian $ of course.
I also get 20% off every so often for being a regular + 25% if I refer a customer (who gets $20 off first cut).
All in all: Very pleased. About time I found someone that could make my hair look good.

You'd be amazed at what hair and shoes does to attract girls (Especially when everyone else here are barely a step above hobos when it comes to maintenance).

Well, considering I pay one third of the price you do for a haircut including tip, I don't see a problem with giving that tip.

True. I could pay $10-15 for a student cut and still no tip. But you get what you pay for in most cases
Tipping culture is something I'll never understand (mind you I adhere to local customs still). Just pay the staff what they are worth and let it be over with. IMHO, tipping should be a reward for outstanding service, not a guilt-trip induced expectancy.

I haven't had a haircut in 20 years. It seems to fallout neatly though, except for the sideburns.

Mine isn't a student haircut. Quality is very good. However, that's because it's in Chinatown. Still I personally think a $45 haircut here is extremely overpriced. For that kind of money they should serve you espresso and give you a foot massage at the same time.
BTW, there are places around here that will serve you refreshments before your haircut. However, it's more like $80-100 for a haircut.

I agree. However, that's the way it is. It should be noted though, that for waiters/waitresses, etc. some here are paid rock bottom amounts, with the expectation that the true pay is through tips. I think that is also stupid, but like I said, that's the way it is.

That's a whole new thread right there. I can't stand tipping nor feeling obligated to do so unless there was spectacular service. But I know actors/musicians posing as staff, so I feel guilty and over- tip anyway.
Japan is an ideal spot for avoiding tips and getting superior service.

£0. Shave it @ home.
When I was getting haircuts, it was $15 (12+3 tip). I had the same woman cutting my hair for about 25 years. She was great. But then I went bald and moved to England.

when I go, it's $25 for the cut, if I get wash and style it's $40 plus tip. Every 3 months or so.
I've been trimming my own bangs for a while so I don't go as often. It's getting long, I let that happen every so often.

My mom's always cut my hair. I've gone to an actual hair dresser maybe three times, and usually paid around $15. FWIW I got one of the best haircuts of my life at SmartStyle in Wal-Mart for $14+tip.

$10 + $3-$5 tip. - simple, looks good. Included a shave sometimes.
I once spent $45 in Vegas from a guy named "Vinnie"- looked like crap. Had to touch up missed hairs.
$35 here in Indy once from a girl named "Asia"- looked like crap. Had to go to another barber to straighten the back.
You get what you pay for

By "best" I mean "exactly like I wanted." Why pay $50+ for someone to cut my hair when I can get it exactly as I'd like for much less?

Of course. You should never pay for anything else than "exactly what you want".
I went through a million different hairdressers both cheap and expensive before I hit someone that could actually work my hair properly. I think I alluded to this earlier.

I think that's been my issue - I never wanted to risk a bad haircut and I don't even know where to start as far as barber shops/salons.

DIY. So sometimes if I do a good job I go for the happy ending.
Last cut I paid for was $7 + tip at a two seater barber shop. I honestly couldn't bring myself to go to any other type of place.

Currently my woman cuts my hair - it's so thick it really doesn't need any special treatment. Otherwise I'm a fan of the simple barber shop.

MY point is, the saying is rarely true. There is a certain point of diminishing returns. And for haircuts, Usually, the $10 cuts are from guys who have been doing it for 30+ years and know how to do a good job. The $40+ cuts are usually twentysomething old people trying to be stylish.
