The iPod had an 82 percent share of the market in U.S. retail stores in the 12 months ended in August, up from 64 percent in the same period a year earlier, and 33 percent two years ago, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD Group Inc.

When was the last time Apple had 82 Percent Marketshare in anything? Have they ever had 82 percent Marketshare in anything?

Wow. Explains why their stock keeps going up even though they pulled the lampshade iMac a few months ago and have had so much trouble shipping the latest G5s.

I would have never guessed that Apple would have been this successful in this field.

Props to them for innovating again.

This time it actually payed off for them.

You KNOW it gives Gates cold sweats at night. He probably had to up his Xanax dosage.

People talk about the price still being too high for the iPod. Even if it is/might be It's still selling like crazy. I never thought i'd see Apple have 82 percent Market share in anything at anytime.

When I was in high school 15 years ago, if any kid was walking around with the equivalent of an object over $250, it was obvious they were spoiled. I saw a few expensive discmans in my day, but the culture has really changed. Kids today expect everything.

Exactly! They are the cool thing to have. Even a passionate apple hater I know wants to have one! (secretly of course) My little sis, who doesnt even like music or technology, wants a mini. My mum wants a mini for going gym or when she is working. I am getting a 20Gb one for christmas, and I know of about 5 ppl who already own iPods. They are only just beginning to become popular in Australia. I just wish Apple would get their buts into gear and start advertising more. I would love to see silhouette ads in Australia.

yet another anti-conformist style conformist

hey... coolness has nothing to do with fashion... sorry if it plays my mp3/aac with 5 hours bat life with 10 GB of space it IS cool even if others find it cool too

a friend of mine has a dell dj. its actually a pretty good device, but it lacks the style and simplicity that an iPod has. and it *feels* noticably heavier.

sometimes i take my iSkin off my 40gb just to admire how sleek it actually is.

that sort of popularity is good for apple. It mightn't be for your view of the iPod but it is for Apple. The more they sell, the more people who have a chance of going to iPod dot com and then noticing that there are Macs... A lot of people where I live hate macs because of schools they went to (only a few years ago) that had 150 iMac G3 Tray Loaders running OS 9 and running off what I have been told was an NT server(?!).

i find it interesting how we buy a sleek device, but because of it's beauty we buy bulky cases to protect it ... we lose the sleekness of it ..

I was just thinking about that before, in my letter to apple:

I love iPods, and I have had a play with one of my friends iPod. However, the thing that is holding me back from buying one myself (and I would buy one right now if it wasn't for this) is that the back surface of the iPod scratches too easily. I am a very looks orientated person (call me superficial) and therefore, scratches all over the back of a device I just paid $500 for would not be something that would make me happy. I know this can be prevented by buying an accessory like the iSkin, but I really would like to avoid this. It's just a big thick rubber coating around your iPod and it defeats the purpose of it being so small. My friend's iPod was scratched by simply taking it out of the box, and even putting it in and out of the Apple iPod Cover scratches it (the apple tag inside). It would be fantastic if in a later revision of the iPod, if you could do something to prevent this. Whether it is putting a plastic coating over it or varnishing it or something. I know I am not the only person in this position, and therefore something really needs to be done. Another friends has bought another brand Hard Disk Mp3 player because this bugged him. Please do something about this!

Stated accurately, Apple has 83% of the 'computer-hard-drive-based' portable music device market. There aren't many competitors in that niche.

Portable devices which play MP3 music account for 5X as many sales as 'computer-hard-drive-based' portable music devices.

So, in other words, Apple's iPod claims an 83% share of a mere 20% of the MP3 portable music device market.

For every six (give or take) portable MP3 devices sold, one is an iPod.

Way to go, Apple.

Knowing me and my lack of keeping up with the latest tech, though, I'll probably not get an iPod for over another yearhell, I don't even own a DVD player or cell phone yet.

I'm willing to wager that a big reason for those flash MP3 devices is that some of them are able to record audio. If the iPod were able to record, it would make those devices look really silly, IMO...

I remember there was a few members over at ihateapple.com that claimed the iPod when it first came out would fail. It was another cube they claimed.

Too expensive, no one would pay that much. It would die in less than a year!

The one that really was pushing that idea no longer posts there. He started his own web page. He blocks people from his page by banning them from the router.

Funny stuff.

I have a mini... I now understand

The iPod is like a Discman only better, but discmans are still available. Unless Apple starts giving out the interface for the iPod I imagine Apple will have a good monopoly

I'm glad to see Apple's success in this market they deserve it and have done a great job with it.

You didn't have to go to ihateapple.com to read posts like that. There were plenty of them here at MacNN. Everytime the iPod celebrates a birthday, I like to "bump" those doom and gloom threads. I can't believe it's been 3 years already.

Even here? Jeesh...

I always believed it would do well.

But I don't think anyone guessed it would do as well as it did.
