1) Why do people try to intimidate each other on the internet the way they would in real life with anonymous threats to anonymous people?
2) How on Earth does a YouTube video about transforming robots turn into this? Why here?
3) Why?

I think he's been rick-rolled just one too many times.
...Oh, and he's pathetic.

It's not just one guy, it's a group of guys from the looks of it, and if you go back to page one of the comments this fight just sort of broke out from the get go.
Just weird...

3) Why?
1) Don't know about intimidating - I've insulted people on the internet though. Lack of maturity on my part.
2) No clue, never saw the movie, not on my long term plan either.
3) Perhaps there is one reason, but probably not.

Besson3c,
That was the music played at my gay lovers funeral. The memories that it brings me is to much to bear. If I ever see you in public I will **** you in the bastard.
Wanker.

I don't know if it was besson who posted that video on YouTube, but I feel like being suckered, so here's your answers:
People tend to be more aggressive and hostile on the Internet because of the perceived layer of anonymity provided by hiding behind a username and an IP address. A person who is docile and accommodating in real life may actually be a bitch on the inside, and they let that side of them come out when they're online.
Typically people who are jerks online are either jerks in real life, or wish they were jerks in real life. People who are genuinely nice don't generally troll online, because they don't gain enjoyment from being assholes.

I assure you that it wasn't me...
I understand the sort of unleashing of people's inner selves theory, perhaps similar to what happens when people get drunk, but I don't understand why more people haven't realized that personal threats to anonymous people just don't have the same effect as they do with people you encounter in real life?
I mean, what is the probability of somebody figuring out the real name and mailing address of somebody else and hopping on a plane solely to beat somebody up or to intimidate them? I'm assuming that this is low enough to at least conclude that the vast majority of the time these sorts of childish fights occur the person is not in possession nor has the means to obtain the other person's contact info.
P.S. are we cool now, or do you still want to punch me in the face?

It's not that they think it will cause any real damage to the opponent's psyche or life - many times, people are assholes for the sake of being assholes. There's no other goal than simply making themselves feel better by being mean and vindictive to strangers.
P.S. are we cool now, or do you still want to punch me in the face?
We'll see. That'll depend on how many inane, poo-related threads or posts you contribute in the next few weeks.

The problem is, I like being annoying sometimes, and the thought of being punched in the face for this is funny to me. Is it okay if I create inane ointment-related threads or posts instead?

Help me understand people: Why do people like being annoying sometimes on the internet? Do they think it makes them funny or tough or cool? I don't get it.

Speaking only for myself, I dislike there being rules and structure to a forum like this because I find it incredibly boring. In real life I have a really difficult time with small talk as well, I like to say off-the-wall things or things which spark debate in a non-offensive way, and I wish to be myself online as well. This is generally what people find to be annoying, but I feel that there should be flexibility for people to babble about oatmeal, ointment, poop, or whatever they wish, and for people to ignore this poster if they choose to rather than insisting on imposing their own little judgment as to what is annoying, cool, funny, or whatever based on their little subjective sphere.
Believe me, I don't babble about these things to be annoying, I do so because I'm crazy and enjoy being crazy.

Why is it that some forms of personal idiosyncrasies are tolerated while others aren't? We have people who are set on converting us to the ways of conservatism (and liberalism, although perhaps to a lesser extent these days), that's generally alright as long as you do this in the PL. You have people like Dakar, Turtle, and Laminar that like to say sly and sarcastic things all of the time, that's okay too. You have people like me and Abe that display our own brands of crazy, this is sort of hit and miss. You have the Twilight people which were virtually expelled for some unknown reason. You have Salty that is generally teased...
We all have our strange quirks and obsessions, that is what makes this place interesting. As long as they don't intentionally offend anybody (like Rob used to do on a regular basis), I think we should stop trying to define what is cool, annoying, funny, or whatever, and just let people be without them having to feel shunned or defensive like people do when they post a thread that questions Apple or OS X, for instance. What would this place be like without all of the people I've listed (as well as many others)?

I'm not sure what a USP is, but I think I'll go with the last choice of awesome here...
Laminar just thinks that he is better than us like he is this amazing athlete that dunks basketballs in your face and then does all of these back flips while he dances around in a victory dance and gloats in your face while you hold back tears, slams a hot dog out of the hands of some kid, and then grabs a bullhorn from somebody and announces that you suck. Meanwhile, Turtle just sort of looks on in the comfort of his furry mascot costume and complains about how the costume makes him really hot and itchy while cursing a few times.
Meanwhile, ghporter is looking at this whole thing in his referee outfit with a whistle in his mouth that he threatens to blow.
