I split my time between a home office and work, and want to have an external in each location with a full time machine backup on each - is that possible?

It should be ok.

The first time you connect the external drive at either location, TM will do a full backup.

Then as you go back and forth between home and work, the hourly incremental backups should occur as soon as you connect the external drive.

You may have to tell TM to use the drive at the new location each time. This I'm not sure of.
