OK, so there are so many ways in which this situation is ****ed.

First, the government is illegally spying on US citizens.
Secondly, telecom companies are co-conspirators in this crime.
Third, it looks like the government is going to give them a literal get-out-of-jail-free card for their crimes.

While I understand that if people could make private phone calls without the government listening, then terrorists could order assisnation strikes, or commision the building of nerve gases and weapons of mass destruction, or recruit thugs to kill people. Oh, wait that was the CIA that did those things. Sorry. I sometimes get terrorists and the CIA confused.

What the hell are we doing letting the government get away with this?

I don't know. Why are you letting the government get away with it?

It's totally unclear to me - are you interested in organizing a general strike?

Though you aren't necessarily doing so here, I'm always a little taken aback that we come down on opposite sides of this issue.

I'm curious what your responses are to the basic arguments against it.

1) We already have FISA, which, if they file the paperwork, pretty much lets us tap any foreigner at any time (I will fully admit that FISA could use a few tweaks, namely there needs to be more people who are authorized to make a request).

2) Even if you trust George Bush (and I'm not saying you do), you would trust every other yet to be elected president with this power?

3) It's unreasonable search and seizure and is therefore unconstitutional.

We what? You're in favor of warrantless wiretapping?

I was just asking for an actionable suggestion of what not "letting the government get away with this" would look like right now. Should we bust out the guillotines?

Interesting idea - how about busting out a copy of the Constitution and filing impeachment papers?

No. I'm against it.

There are other posts that have made it seem to me as if it didn't bother you (which I looked for and couldn't dig up).

Consider the accusation withdrawn.

Found em.

It was a combo of this:

and this:

The first one I think I read too quickly, the second one was long enough ago that I had forgotten it was about Habeas Corpus, though FISA was also part of the question that prompted your response.

I would (and did) disagree with the second quote.
