It was waist high for me last night, but the wind was blowing perpendicular to my door. It did shoot sideways through the gap in my (heated) garage, and I had a half-foot of snow stuck on the wall in the corner... Four feet off the ground.

By the end of the night it was three times that size. Judging by the water mark, it reached all the way to that dangling wire.

The storm pretty much missed us here in St. Louis. Yes, we got a few inches of nasty ice balls and snow... but we missed the real snowpocolypse.

What is annoying is that all of the local news stations and papers acted as though the entire city was about to be crushed by a giant meteorite or something. On the day of the storm all of our local stations covered nothing but the storm for about 12 hours straight. It's a little ridiculous. No, it's a lot ridiculous.

This happened to us last year, except we got nothing. Not even a dusting. I admit I was a bit skeptical this time around.

This happens in the DC area practically any time there is even a hint of snow.

I agree. What other job can you have and be that inaccurate and still keep your job?
Yesterday, I told my office staff that we would close today due to the forecasted bad weather (even though I was really skeptical about the forecast).
Today, the roads were actually better than yesterday, and didn't have the heart to call them back in to work.

Last year DC got hammered with about 3 feet of snow and everybody from NY and north and west laughed as us babies. DC is really a southern swamp town and we just dealt with it. Now the rest of the country is getting hammered and they sound like the big babies now.

Not that I wish for snow this deep, but so far our winter has consisted of ice storm after ice storm. We may only get about 6-8 inches with each storm, but when that is soaked with rain and then locks up with ice it makes life pretty miserable.

Still don't understand how people end up upside down off the road though, idiot drivers.

I'm pretty sure we got more than 3' even in DC proper. One of my coworkers who lives in Frederick had nearly 60" at his house.

The problem was less the snow itself, and more the fact that DC (probably rightly) has not invested in the equipment or planning to deal with heavy snowfall. The city's performance in the fairly minor snow this year, however, has been pitiful. (I was really hoping for my first no-snow winter since leaving California, too.

) But all in all, I can't fault DC for the trouble's last year; when I lived in Somerville (outside Boston) the city was prepared for that sort of snow fall, there's no reason DC should be.

The snow we had back a couple of weeks was only a few inches, but the plows were nowhere to be seen. Every idiot, 18 wheeler, and Metro bus was out early to clog the roads. The Middle-eastern cabbies weren't much better. The snow on the unplowed streets became ice by 8PM, and getting from DC to Sterling took me 6 hours, with almost 3 hours spent on Rte 7 between 66 and Tysons Corner. A distance of 2.5 miles. Amazingly, Rte 7 through Falls Church ( about 3 miles) was plowed and fairly clean.
