i have two external Hard drives tht i bought, one 40 GB and one 60GB. The 60GB one more recent and i shortly after i bought i decided to tranfer some files over to my macbook. But the External HD was only formted for a pc, so what i need to know is how to reformat this HD.

Before you go formatting, you do realize Macs can access disks formatted for PC

i'm afraid i have tried that but because the HD is in windows NT file system, it doesn't do anything at all, is there any other way i can do it?

But not write if it's formatted to NTFS which is most likely the problem.

i can't actually do anything with the HD, i can't copy anything to it or save anything on it. I tried to erase it and repair it in the disk ulity but it just does nothing, the button isn;t even highlighted. When i right click/get info it says' Format:Window NT Filesystem' whereas the 40GB has'Format: MS dos'.

Format them to HFS Extended (Journaled). Sounds like the 60gb may be dead.

FAT32-formatted drives are accessible from Windows and Mac OS X, with both reading and writing. One little problem is that you can't have any single file with a size over 4GB.
But, as seanc said, if you aren't going to use the drive with Windows, HFS+ (journaled) is probably your best option.
