Yep - it's diminishing returns. It's corny, but it's true - it's not the hours you work, it's the work you put into the hours.

I see this when I drive out to my in laws in CA. It is located along I-10 near Palm Springs. At least they didn't throw a fit when is was announced

It's kind of cool, but I agree the cages are less elegant.

I wonder how much stress turbine towers get? I know it's a big wind load, but they are spinning with the flow so it can't be that much.

I think they're all pretty much idle in that picture, or the wind is so variable that none of them are moving much, so they can't line up with the wind. In Texas the wind turbines use pylons, not towers. Much more elegant in my opinion.
This may be for the same reason that they're replacing the climbable freeway sign towers with cast concrete stands: to keep the taggers off of them (as much so the taggers don't fall into traffic as to keep the signs clean).

Actually, most of the turbines near Palm Springs are on pylons as well. I actually can't recall ever even noticing any of the tower kind, and I go to Palm Springs often.

Since they're so big and tall, you could use the pylons to generate energy themselves through convection. If they're in places like Palm Springs and Texas where it's often hot, that'd be quite a bit of extra energy.

Hmmm, cover them with mirrors maybe? And maybe a bunch of little turbines all the way down. Seems like a long waste of space. They could be painted neat colors too.
