Lately, Mail.app has become very slow in sending out an email. It seems even the smallest purely text email spends a good amount of time sitting in the Out box. I'd say it's taking the better part of 30-40 seconds to get an email sent. It just sits in the Out box, until Mail decides to send, then it goes.

I use mail for multiple accounts, and it's this way for all of them.

I've used the Rebuild function on each mailbox, but that didn't seem to have any effect. Following the advice I found on this page, I forced a reindexing. That didn't have any effect, either.

This has been going on for only the past couple of weeks. Up until then, Mail was perfectly snappy. And it still is, save for sending mails out. Even the search function is working fine.

Any ideas?

check the outgoing server dns names (smtp??). If one is out of date because they want to switch to a new one I've seen it take a while to send.

Do you have more than one email provider? ie - gmail, .mac, hotmail, lavabit? Try sending test emails through the other providers. See if it's on your end (all providers affected), or a particular providers' server.

It appears that Gmail is the culprit.

I sent a test mail using my ISP email account (Comcast) as the sender, and it went out as soon as I clicked Send. Sending a test with a Gmail account, though, takes its time.

I'm not sure how to fix this, though.
