Welcome to the Game Replay, the thrice-weekly look at the wider world of gaming by the staff of MacNN. In today's edition, Psyonix reveals it earned $110M in revenue from Rocket League so far, the head of Gameloft reportedly intends to step down following Vivendi's successful hostile takeover, Bungie will reveal the fourth Destiny expansion next week, and GOG allows players to import games into its library from Steam for free.

Rocket League exceeds $110M in revenue, has 5M active players

Rocket League, a soccer game involving rocket-propelled cars, has earned its developers a hefty sum of money, according to an interview with studio executives. Psyonix, the team behind the popular PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One title, has so far hauled in over $110 million in revenue, up from the $70 million reported earlier this year.

Player numbers have also increased since its launch, with it selling over five million copies across all platforms, reports Forbes, an increase of one million from December. The sales do not take into account the large number of players who acquired the game for free via PlayStation Plus, which make up approximately 42 percent of the active player base. Between last July and this month, over 15 million players have played the game, with over 5 million active players in April alone.

Despite being free to many players, game sales are not the only way Psyonix has made money. It claims over 5 million units of DLC have been bought across all platforms, with the DLC including flags and vehicles, some stemming from brand deals.

"Our numbers are actually going up, not down, which is not very common for a game that's ten months old," said vice president Jeremy Dunham. "Thanks to PlayStation Plus at launch, those numbers are really front-loaded in the beginning." The other platforms do still make up a hefty contingent, despite the lack of a free copy of the game, with Steam accounts making up 36 percent of active players, and Xbox One with 22 percent.

Psyonix did suggest last August that the game would be ported to Mac, but so far it hasn't surfaced.

Vivendi succeeds in hostile bid for Gameloft, CEO reportedly plans to resign

The head of Gameloft is planning to resign, following after the successful hostile takeover of the publisher by Vivendi. Chairman and CEO Michel Guillemot is said to be preparing to step down from the company, now that Vivendi controls the majority of votes in the publisher.

According to Bloomberg, Vivendi has 56 percent of the votes following its generous offer to shareholders. Vivendi will be appointing a majority of directors on Gameloft's board during the annual shareholder meeting on June 29, with a new CEO also expected to be named at the event.

Guillemot is likely to join his brothers in managing Ubisoft, which is believed to be the next target for Vivendi. While the Guillemot family owns 15 percent of Ubisoft, Vivendi owns 18 percent and wants representation on the board, though it is not apparently seeking control of the company yet. Ubisoft's management is working with advisors to find another partner to help fend off an advance by Vivendi, though previous talks with one backer apparently broke down.

Bungie to announce fourth Destiny expansion on Twitch next week

Bungie is preparing to reveal to players what to expect in the fourth major expansion for Destiny. The studio is planning to host a livestream on Twitch to announce the expansion on June 9 at 10am PT (1pm ET), which is currently believed to ship sometime in September.

Some details of the expansion have seemingly already leaked, with images surfacing last month depicting the Iron Banner Crucible master, and the title "Rise of Iron." Polygon believes this may have been confirmed by Bungie's announcement, as the header image features characters in Iron Banner armor, thought to be one of the central aspects of the expansion. Rumors suggest it will be bigger than the first two year-one packs, and will have a new raid featuring "Fallen with a twist."

Previous reports about Bungie's organizational issues indicate the expansion is being offered in lieu of a full sequel. The second full game in the series was expected to arrive this year, but has been pushed back to next year.

GOG Connect allows players to copy games from Steam to GOG for free

GOG has launched a new service that allows players to duplicate games from Steam accounts into their GOG library. Launched as GOG Connect, the service aims to stop players from buying a game multiple times, by simply providing games listed on a player's connected Steam account within their GOG.com account.

The imported games are permanently added to accounts, reports Eurogamer, though there are some slight catches players have to be aware of. First, the window of opportunity to duplicate games from Steam is offered for a limited time on a game-by-game basis, due to contractual conditions between GOG and the publisher or developer. A GOG account can only be connected to one Steam account, and even though a game may be owned on both platforms, there is no guarantee that save files will be compatible.

For GOG Connect's launch, there are 28 potential games able to be imported, including The Witness and FTL, though the longest period of time available to copy games over is just five days. Once copied over, the game remains available after the copying period has ended, and are free from DRM protection systems.
