So, my family was in the market for a new iMac, to replace our old eMachines box from 2005. When the new iMacs came out today, we went to our local Church of Apple and picked them up pronto - the cashier told us we were the first to buy one at that particular store. We got the baseline 20 inch model.

Initial Impressions
It is a damn sexy machine. I'm sure you've all seen the photos, but it's even sweeter in real life. The screen is now flush with the surface, and sports a nice glossy black border. The brushed metal enclosure is about 3/4 of an inch thick, and about 1 1/2 inches with the bulge on the back taken into account. The iChin is about 1/2 the height of the Intel iMac's.
It's also very very quiet - It's hard to tell if it uses fans or just passive cooling! While re-installing Tiger after partitioning the drive, I could only hear the fans if the room was silent, and I listened closely. Certainly the 17 inch Rev A iMac G5 is much louder than this thing, even on idle.
Another nice feature is the RAM location - instead of cracking the machine open, there's a little door on the bottom between the speakers that pops open with a phillips screwdriver, and reveals the RAM slots. I'm not sure if the previous Intel iMacs had this feature, but the G5 certainly didn't and it's a nice touch.
I don't like the switch away from matte screens, but it does come with a cloth to wipe off that über-reflective glossy finish.
I played around with GarageBand a little - the "Magic Song" feature is nifty, and I can imagine it will be extremely useful to throw together a theme song for your family vacation DVD. It also contains a few added niceties, like an option that lets you use your keyboard as a Piano, rather than having to click that blasted on-screen Piano keyboard.
Which brings me to by far the coolest thing, in my opinion - the keyboard. It is ridiculously thin - think a couple of credit cards stacked on top of the other. The keys are very responsive - on the old desktop keyboard, I have to pound the keys down, now they respond with a light tap. There's also no deep crevices for dirt and gunk to collect. It's a tremendous improvement, and I can't wait until they start selling them separately.
Overall, I'm highly impressed with this, although I haven't had ample opportunity to put it through its paces.

Next Post - Pictures!

Unboxing and setup pictures!

The Box -

Cracking it Open -

Taking it Out -

Back in Black -

All set up - time to turn it on.

Oh, Apple logo, your simple beauty fills my life with a sense of child-like wonder.

The micro-fiber cloth for wiping the screen down.

I've got a lovely bunch of Macintoshes...

A close up of that marvelous new keyboard - if it's hard to make out, the apple logo is indeed missing from the command keys, replaced by "command." Expose is now on F3, and Dashboard is on F4. F7, 8, and 9 are now rewind, play/pause, and fast forward, while F10-F12 are the volume control keys.

That wraps up my initial impression of the new iMac - i'll add more as I put it through its paces, and play around with iLife '08 more extensively. If you have any specific questions, just ask and I'll do my best to provide answers.

Glad to hear it is quiet

What is the new iMovie like? Is it less buggy, and less DV-cam-dependent than the previous iMovie was? I am very excited to try that out. How speedy does the new iMovie feel on it? It is not supported on G4s, so I'm thinking that will be a processor intensive guy.

Does it take full size RAM? How much RAM does yours have, and how much paging and slowdown do you see with many apps open (Safari, Mail, iPhoto, iTunes, and some other pick-your-choice program) and you try to pull up Dashboard quickly to check something? Does it take ages for it to pull up the Dashboard?

I will likely upgrade, and currently I use a G4 1.42GHz Mac Mini... with only 512MB RAM. I think it's time... and I want 4GB of RAM for my new iMac if I get it.

The new interface is a big improvement. It's much easier to find footage in clips and drag it into the timeline - just click once to set the start point, again to set the end point, and drag over the portion you need to the timeline. It automatically splits up footage into thumbnails for every five seconds of footage, so you don't have to dig through to find what you're looking for. It feels very speedy on the most basic model, with Garageband, iPhoto, iDVD, and iTunes all open.

The Apple website says it takes PC2-5300 SO-DIMM's. We just stuck with the basic 1GB, and it starts to page pretty quickly with just a couple minute long iMovie project. I don't have an internet connection for the iMac just yet (c'mon Comcast, you've had seven days!), so once I get that hooked up and start using my typical array of apps (Camino, iTunes, Mail, Adium, Photoshop/Flash CS3, Painter X, processing), I'll be able to report on paging and snappiness. Dashboard is very responsive while working with iMovie, Garageband, and iPhoto, but it's only populated with basic Widgets (World Clock, Tile Game, Unit Converter, Dictionary, etc) until there's a net connection.

Coming from that, the new iMac will be a twofold improvement, if not more so, especially with 4GB of Ram. I have 2GB of RAM on my 2.16 C2D MBP, and I almost never page out unless I'm working with humongous (3000 x 4000 pixel) or larger images in Photoshop CS3 and Painter X simultaneously.

Hope that answers your questions.

Thank you for posting those pictures, your iMac looks fantastic!

I have 3 questions I was hoping you might answer:

1.Could give your detailed impressions of the screen quality. Seeing that other iMac on your desk could you possibly compare the new screen to that one?

2.Is the mighty mouse still white like it always was or did they change the color to match the enclosure and keyboard? (I guess white would technically still be a match due to the keys on the keyboard being white)

3.Is it true that the remote no longer magnetically attaches on to the case?

Thank you!

Not at all! I love getting my geek on like this. Yay for living vicariously through internet fora!

1. The screen is much brighter than my old iMac (a Rev A G5). The quality is great - very sharp, sharper than the old screen (although that one has three years of accumulated crap on the surface). A comfortable DPI, as long as I don't lean in too close (else I see the pixels with my youthful 20/15 vision - probably not a problem for most people). It doesn't have the slight sparkle/glitter that I had on my old iMac and now on my matte MBP screen.

2. The mighty mouse is still the same white it's always been - I imagine it would be hard to bend Aluminium to the shapes required for the mighty mouse.

3. The remote does not attach to the case magnetically any longer. One more thing to keep track of, unfortunately.

One more thing - it no longer has the soothing, pulsating, sleep light anywhere on it - one of the sacrifices of the aluminium enclosure. There's no way to tell if it's turned off or just asleep short of trying to wake it up - although I rarely turn my macs off anyways, so it's not that big of a deal.

Thanks for the excellent and fast responses!

If XBench is still a valid benchmarking tool, it would be nice to see what your iMac gets: Xbench: Comprehensive Macintosh Benchmarking

Good to know, will be interested once more Widgets fall into your dashboard.

I hope so - and glad you agree. I will probably wait to see some benchmarks, especially on the 2.8 high-end model, then take the plunge.

vertigociel -- I see you said you're keeping with the 1 GB RAM. What some don't know with this iMac release is now they have put the 1 GB chip as a single chip, which still leave's a free slot. And on NewEgg they have a 1 GB chip for $39.99 + shipping, so it may be worth the small cost when you can.

You mentioned F3 is the Expose key. But what about the App-only and Desktop Expose keys - where are they?

I use the desktop and app-only keys more than the "all windows" key.

There doesn't seem to be a way to change the functionality of the F3 Key (it's all-windows), but you can still use F10 and F11 for app-only and desktop. You have to hold Fn down, or change the keyboard preferences to have F1-F12 to control software features, though.

Local Apple store, because you can walk in with your credit card and 10 mins later you can walk out with an iMac (and a credit card which has been maxed out).

Is the monthly payment option available if buying at apple store? And college student discounts with ipod nano specials? Sorry for the many questions I have.

I don't know about the monthly payment - I'd imagine so, but I'm not sure. The student discounts and specials are available - just show em a student ID, give them a .edu email address, or (like I did) just log on to your school's online course registration in front of a cashier, and they'll give you the Education discount and free-after-rebate Nano.

Overall, the new iMac is indeed faster. Keep in mind that the older iMac was a top-of-the-line 24 Inch Model, and the new iMac is the cheapest, lowest-spec, stock configuration. That should put things in perspective.

I am a photographer and thinking about buying an iMac.

Some users on other forum dislike the glossy monitor due to strong reflection of windows and indoor lights.

Do you have any issues with the reflection on your monitor?

You know, I thought I would, since I'm a big fan of matte displays. However, since the screen is so bright, it's hard to notice reflections unless the setting sun is coming in through the windows. As long as you have blinds on windows and no fluorescent spotlights (like they do at the Apple Store), reflections aren't a big deal.

One downside to the glossy displays, however, is the over-saturation of colors. The colors you see on the display are typically brighter than if you printed the image out - more of an issue for web or graphic designers, who have to ensure that colors look good on a wide variety of monitors, but something you should consider nonetheless. I'd recommend checking them out at the store yourself - it's largely a manner of personal taste.

The photos of the unboxing were great. Congratulations, I am glad you got one, now I am salivating, no slobbering over the new features, and am insanely jealous. I love the keyboard or think it might be a nice touch. I think Macs weak point is the mouse "mighty or not". I use the mouse with a Wacom pad it's much more workable as far as I am concerned. Waiting on Comcast is about as much fun as getting a root canal, or french kissing a tarantula. Good luck with the installation some of their people are very professional, some have as much business working on technology as I do running a 747.
Congratulations on your purchase and hope you enjoy it I am sure you will.

Is that the standard 24" with the 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or did you get the 256MB 7600 GT option? Is it 2.16 or 2.33 GHz?

Actually, according to Xbench, the new one is slower in pretty much every category except disk access, where for some reason it's so much faster it's ridiculous. Of course, this is a bottom-of-the-line model whereas the old iMac is the previous top of the line.

I think that's cause this has a 7200 RPM HD, while his seems to have a 5400.

After using this for a day with my usual array of apps (Camino, iTunes, Adium, Clutter, Photoshop CS3, Painter X, Flash CS3, Processing, BOINC), I'm really impressed. Very snappy, even when paging out in PS, thanks to the 7200 RPM drive. Dashboard always comes up quickly. I've had this thing running full load crunching some SETI@Home data (which it does in a smoking 50 minutes if using both cores - it took about 8 hours on my G5), and it's still almost completely silent. Amazing.

Hi...

Does the image of the iMac on the box include the cloud icon in the menu bar (the HimmelBar utility)?

It looks like it does. My white Intel iMac box had it. I always wondered why they'd show a third party app.

No, but it does show the iChat status icon (a dialogue bubble), which you're probably mistaking it for.

Ooooooh...OK. Funny I had that wrong for so long. Thanks for clearing that up. Had to go look at my box to make sure you're right. Odd that I had it so wrong for so long.

Oh well, thanks!

Could you tell me your thoughts on the new keyboard? I'm thinking of ordering one from the apple store to use with my old imac. Is it nice? Comfortable? Usable? Tell me your thoughts, or review or whatever.

Actually, the keyboard is possibly my favorite aspect of the new iMac. The keys are both sensitive and responsive, with a firm tactile click, unlike the comparatively mushy feedback of my MBP keyboard. The flat keys and wide spaces between them weren't a problem after I had gotten used to them - which took about ten minute. There's no crevices for crap to pile up in, like in the old keyboard, and you don't have to punch the keys down - just tap them. Plus, it's quite ridiculously thin.

I highly recommend it.

Yikes. Don't buy a computer on credit. Save up and wait till you can afford it.
