I wasn't particularly polarised one way or the other as far as the forum software goes either, but having vB back is like a familiar old friend and I too appreciate all the work the mods put into this place.
Thanks guys!
|
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Ahead of the curve and sadly ignored. Come on, it's not like you guys are busy or anything.

Praise Allah, I can now see all the way back to when the forums came back online on the first page.

Really wish the ability to mark everything as read weren't on a per-forum basis. I want to mark all forums as read... With the way the forums were a year ago it was ideal, I'd go to a forum and it'd automatically be marked as read the next time I went into, say "Mac Desktops". This is a couple steps back in my eyes...

No, because it didn't mark things "read" -- it actually marked things "unchanged since last visit".
There was no way to see whether something had actually been READ at all.

Same difference. Opening the subforum should mark all forums as read (obviously it doesn't know if I read them but that's not the point). Other wise it's a pain to sift through every forum looking for new posts or I have to go to every forum and click the wrench icon, then select the "Mark This forum ReadMark This Forum Read".

Didn't think to look there...I'll leave a little something in the tip jar on my way out.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but would it be possible to have a "New Posts Minus the Mac/Tech News forums" button ?

Put NewsPoster on ignore? (Edit: this won't work, apparently?)
I'm reluctant to do so, though, because that's actually where a lot of the interesting discussion happens. It only ever happens in the Lounge or the other forums if somebody posts a link there, and then it's stupidly redundant, because it's already being discussed in the Tech News forum.
All you get on the remaining forums are the constant complaints how dead they are.

Yep, ask them to ban you from those forums.

Banning is too ... drastic.
Guess that I'll just put up with the spam.

Moderators, now's the time to strike.
Unban his old nick but refuse to kill the newsposter for that account.

Whoa.
This is like coming back to what used to be one's home town decades later only to find out that nothing whatsoever has changed. Bit unreal that. Kickin' it old school. Very, very, very old school.

Well, to be bluntly honest - it's reader50's coding prowess that provides the staying power. He just happened to have a bunch of old templates, graphics and CSS rules lying about that saved him and everybody else the hassle of having to come up with new crap.
It (teh design) did age quite well, though. Gray FTW!1!! It's the new black white gold!

We tried gold buttons if you recall. Reception was underwhelming. The best UI seems to be minimal - things that don't distract the user. I'll take this style over the huddler version any day. btw, we are back on vB in case that wasn't obvious.

@effgee
Welcome back. And you just missed a little adventure in theme/hostingland, although I'm sure this intermediate design would have made you cringe.

I remember seeing the Huddler implementation once. Briefly. Can't comment on the functionality (*), but the look & feel, errr... let's just say there was 'room for improvement'.

Nah, nothing that fancy. Marissa just asked me to create the print production file off of the Windows Paint mock-up she sent me.

I don't recall how old the redesign is, but compared to the few forums I browse, this still looks sleek. Most forums I see are usually more utilitarian in style (at best).
