Never had an xbox or ps2, got an N64 though. The xbox2 does look like its going to be a major leap forward so I might just have to get one

Graphics in these demos look good, i'm downloading the movies but they're taking a while.

Those are not Xbox 2.

Those are Microsoft XNA technology demos. XNA is like Visual Studio .NET - a modular set of development tools, except for game consoles and the PC. The Xbox 2 will certainly have most (if not all) of its games developed by people using XNA, but those demos are not actual Xbox 2 demonstrations.

Looking at the effects used in those demos, though, that is something the Xbox 2 will be able to handle with no problem. Hell, the Xbox can handle almost all of the effects shown. It will always come down to more memory for these complex modelsmore graphics and CPU horsepower to display as many of these models/polygons/effects onscreeen as possible. Hopefully gameplay can keep up with graphical effects next generation, which is what I'm worried about for gaming in general.

Also, what's the latest information on if XBox 2 will be backwards compatible?

The girl's eyes in those shots look horribly fake. Why in the bloody do all video game eyes look so horrid? For all the detail they can cram into games these days, all video games still get the eyes wrong.

In order to make eyes realistic, they'd have to use more than one texture layer with specular. Multiple textures with specular eat up tons of memory

BTW, gorickey, awesome new sig you got there!

Don't forget that its main style is noir. Noir mean:

A genre of crime literature featuring tough, cynical characters and bleak settings.

If they used real eye effects, they'll lose the depressing feeling. Everything should be dull and grainy.

I like it a lot. Maybe it's just been so drilled into me from Halo that it's like I have to love it. Kinda like Windows with the rest of the world. Hey everybody, I think MS is on to something here...

As a graphics demo, if that's realtime, it's not bad. I expect similar from Sony's and Nintendo's next offering.

But as a film noir style, it's not that good. Much of the film noir look is shadows, lighting, and camera angles. It is not simply a smoky atmosphere in black and white.

But I think they wanted to show off high quality graphics, which the film noir look doesn't lend itself too. There's a bit of a conflict in a lot of people's eyes. Sort of like people thinking Mario graphics are crappy because they look too cartoony (they're supposed to!)

Realism is but an art style. Developers and gamers need to live by those words.
